Overview

Job Summary

Assumes responsibility for the technical operations of the specific laboratory section. Ensures that all procedures are performed as defined in section policy and procedure. Assists and supports the Lab Director/Manager/Supervisor. Assists in maintaining a point-of-care testing program for the Atrium Health Laboratory Network, meeting or exceeding regulatory standards of CLIA, CAP, and TJC, and ensuring safe, acceptable lab practices.

Essential Functions

  1. Ensures the implementation and maintenance of quality, efficiency, and safety in the section by meeting all accreditation standards (CAP, AABB, TJC, etc.) on a continual basis.
  2. Demonstrates initiative in tracking and resolving problems, continually checking the accuracy of processes, test methods, instruments, including review of results and clerical errors before reporting to the medical record.
  3. Assigns work for the section and assists in workload evaluations as needed, delegating authority and responsibility to ensure timely completion and reporting of work.
  4. Participates in writing and reviewing policies and procedures.
  5. Performs competency assessments for the section, ensuring all team members meet accreditation complexity requirements prior to reporting patient results and ongoing thereafter.
  6. Resolves POCT technical issues and problems.
  7. Communicates effectively with physicians, laboratory medical and administrative directors, nursing administration and supervisors, laboratory staff, and nursing staff.

Physical Requirements

Works in a fast-paced clinical environment. The area contains biohazardous (infectious) materials along with chemical, fire, and mechanical hazards. Duties may involve standing, walking, stretching, stooping, bending, and lifting light (20 pounds) to moderately heavy (50 pounds) loads.

Education, Experience, and Certifications

Bachelor’s Degree with certification as MT(ASCP), MLS(ASCP), HTL(ASCP), CT(ASCP), or equivalent is required. Point-of-Care experience preferred.
