Job Description
Memorial Hermann seeks a Lead Medical Technologist to join our team. The ideal candidate should have experience as a generalist in departments including Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, and Microbiology.
Schedule: 12-hour shifts, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., every other weekend.
This position is responsible for the daily supervision of laboratory operations, including staff scheduling, quality assurance, cost efficiency, and patient satisfaction. The Lead Medical Technologist performs management functions as directed by the Department Manager or Lab Director and represents the laboratory in their absence. The role involves delivering appropriate patient care based on the age and population served.
Note: Position suitable only for hospitals with >400 beds or Consolidated Laboratories.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Biological Science (or equivalent for foreign education)
- Certifications: Medical Technologist (ASCP or AMT), Certified CLS (ASCP or ASCP-International), or Certified MLS (ASCP or ASCP-International)
Experience / Knowledge / Skills
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a high-complexity clinical laboratory within the specified area, demonstrating leadership skills
- Completion of competency in the assigned area within 1 year of accepting this position
Principal Accountabilities
- Oversee, evaluate, perform, and document laboratory tests, quality control, maintenance, and corrective actions according to policies and procedures. Maintain technical procedures and meet competency requirements. Write procedures and demonstrate knowledge of laboratory information systems.
- Support customer service initiatives, recognize satisfaction issues, and build effective relationships with staff and other departments.
- Understand and utilize quality techniques, serve on quality and technical teams, and act as a resource for technical processes and laboratory information systems.
- Develop and validate laboratory tests and assays under the direction of the Department Manager or Lab Director. Verify test results, troubleshoot technical issues, and interact with physicians and other departments.
- Promote quality patient care and customer service, safety, cost efficiency, and CQI processes.
- Participate in hiring, training, and mentoring staff, and verify new employee competencies.
- Ensure compliance with hospital, laboratory, and governmental standards (TJC, FDA, CAP, AABB, HCFA, OSHA, CLIA).
- Maintain safety protocols and adhere to policies within budget and productivity standards.
- Support professional growth, serve as a preceptor and mentor, and demonstrate Memorial Hermann’s service standards by providing compassionate, personalized, and efficient care.
