Job summary

Blue Origin is seeking a senior Mechanisms Engineering Lead in Washington state. You will mentor a team of mechanisms engineers and own the technical strategy for mechanism design, development, integration, and qualification across the lunar program.

You will guide deployable and actuated mechanisms, including gimbals, and drive trade studies and buy decisions. Qualifications include 8+ years in mechanism design and leadership, experience with deployables, latches, actuators, and gimbal systems,

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field
  • 8+ years of mechanism design, development, and testing in aerospace or high-reliability industries
  • 2+ years in a people leadership or supervisory role
  • Experience designing and qualifying deployables, latches, actuators, or separation systems
  • Direct experience with gimbal system design (engine gimbals, antenna pointing mechanisms)
  • Experience with deployable structures (solar arrays, landing legs, antennas)
  • Strong understanding of kinematics, tribology, and mechanism failure modes
  • Experience leading design reviews and technical decision-making in fast-paced development
  • Strong communication skills to influence cross-functional stakeholders and leadership
  • U.S. citizen or eligible to work in the U.S.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of mechanisms engineers
  • Own the technical strategy for mechanism design, development, integration, and qualification
  • Guide design of deployable, actuated, and separation mechanisms
  • Lead design and qualification of gimbal systems
  • Drive design trade studies and make/buy decisions for mechanism subsystems
  • Ensure mechanisms meet requirements across mission environments
  • Collaborate with systems engineering, structures, avionics, and manufacturing teams
  • Oversee test planning, execution, and anomaly resolution for mechanism testing
  • Manage workload, staffing, and hiring to meet program needs
  • Establish engineering standards and lessons learned
  • Support design reviews and represent the mechanisms team
  • Manage risk, technical debt, and reliability concerns
  • Foster safety, ownership, and continuous improvement
