Job summary

Nouryon in Salisbury, NC seeks a Lead Mechanic to keep plant equipment and utility systems running safely and reliably. You will perform preventive and demand maintenance with a focus on mechanical maintenance and welding in a chemical manufacturing setting.

Responsibilities include welding, fabrication, equipment operation, and participation in HSES activities, with strong emphasis on safety and GMP adherence. This is a full-time, on-site role reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor.

Qualifications

• Industrial maintenance experience 2–5 years in manufacturing or chemical plant.
• Hands-on welding experience, TIG/GTA and stick welding.
• Ability to troubleshoot basic electrical and instrumentation issues.
• Strong commitment to safety and GMP practices.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive and demand maintenance on plant equipment and systems.
• Work safely in a chemical plant environment following required procedures (Permit to Work, LOTOTO, confined space, hot work, line breaking, crane operations, energized work, excavation, working at heights).
• Enter, update, and close maintenance work orders using Preventive Maintenance software.
• Perform welding and fabrication work (GTA/TIG welding with Hastelloy C-276, stainless steels; stick welding of steel).
• Operate welding and fabrication equipment (arc/stick welders, plasma cutters, grinders, pipe threaders, drills, saws).
• Maintain plant utility systems (boilers, deionized water, air compressors; boiler inspections, water testing, compressor maintenance).
• Assist electrical/instrumentation maintenance (instrument calibration, motor replacement, wiring/conduit installation, fuse replacement, multimeter troubleshooting).
• Participate in HSES activities; follow GMP; work with minimal supervision; manage changing priorities.

About the Job:

The Lead Mechanic is responsible for keeping plant equipment and utility systems running safely and reliably. This role performs both preventive and demand maintenance, with a focus on mechanical maintenance, welding, utilities, electrical troubleshooting, and instrumentation. You’ll work in a chemical manufacturing environment and will need to be comfortable working independently, handling changing priorities, and following strict safety procedures.

In your future role as Lead Mechanic, you will:

• Perform preventive and demand maintenance on plant equipment and systems.
• Work safely in a chemical plant environment and follow required procedures for: Permit to Work LOTOTO (Lockout/Tagout) Confined space Hot work Line breaking Crane operations Energized work Excavation Working at heights.
• Use Preventive Maintenance software to enter, update, and close preventive and demand maintenance work orders.
• Perform a variety of welding and fabrication work, including:
  • GTA/TIG welding of Hastelloy C-276, 316 stainless steel, and 304 stainless steel.
  • Stick welding of steel piping, plate, and angle.
  • Fitting threaded and welded piping.
• Operate maintenance and fabrication equipment such as Miller-style arc and stick welding equipment, plasma cutters, grinders, pipe threaders, drill presses, band saws, and other machine tools.
• Maintain plant utility systems, including boilers, deionized water systems, and air compressors.
• Perform boiler inspections, water testing, and compressor maintenance.
• Support electrical and instrumentation maintenance, including:
  • Instrument calibration
  • Motor replacement
  • Wiring and conduit installation
  • Fuse replacement
  • Multimeter troubleshooting.
• Participate in HSES activities as directed by management or outlined in the site’s HSES Annual Site Plan.
• Follow applicable Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) when performing work within the role.
• Work with minimal supervision and take ownership of assigned work.
• Manage time effectively and adjust to changing priorities and day-to-day maintenance needs.
• Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.

We believe you bring:

• High school diploma or GED.
• 2-5 years of industrial maintenance experience, preferably in a manufacturing or chemical plant environment.
• Hands-on experience with mechanical maintenance and welding.
• Experience with or knowledge of TIG/GTA and stick welding.
• Ability to troubleshoot basic electrical and instrumentation issues.
• Ability to safely use tools and equipment commonly found in a maintenance environment.
• Strong commitment to safety and safe work practices.
• Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
• Strong time-management skills and the ability to handle continual change and shifting priorities.
• Ability and willingness to work in office, laboratory, and production environments and meet the physical demands of the maintenance mechanic role.
