Job summary

QXO is seeking a Lead Mechanic to oversee daily maintenance and service operations, mentor technicians, and drive safety and reliability across shop, yard, and field service environments.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; technical or vocational training preferred.
  • 5+ years in equipment, fleet, industrial, or heavy equipment maintenance.
  • Experience maintaining forklifts, trailers, construction equipment, fleet vehicles, or industrial machinery.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and team development skills.
  • Proficiency with maintenance documentation and computerized maintenance systems.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

What You’ll Do

The Lead Mechanic is responsible for overseeing daily maintenance and service operations while providing hands‑on mechanical leadership. This role leads and mentors technicians, coordinates workflow, and ensures equipment, vehicles, trailers, and fleet assets are maintained safely, efficiently, and with minimal downtime. The Lead Mechanic serves as the technical leader for the shop, driving quality workmanship, preventive maintenance, operational excellence, and exceptional customer service while supporting business objectives.

Shop Leadership & Operations
  • Lead daily maintenance and repair operations to ensure efficient workflow and timely completion of work
  • Assign, prioritize, and monitor repair work based on operational priorities and technician skill sets
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and technical guidance to mechanics and service technicians
  • Monitor department productivity, quality, and service performance
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement
Equipment Maintenance & Repair
  • Perform advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on equipment, vehicles, trailers, forklifts, and other fleet assets
  • Conduct preventive maintenance, inspections, and safety checks to maximize equipment reliability
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and fuel system issues
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns and support timely resolution of operational issues
  • Monitor equipment performance and recommend repairs, replacements, or upgrades when appropriate
Preventive Maintenance & Asset Management
  • Lead and maintain preventive maintenance programs for company equipment and fleet assets
  • Coordinate maintenance schedules to minimize equipment downtime
  • Monitor service history and maintenance records to support long‑term asset performance
  • Assist with fleet readiness, equipment inspections, and lifecycle planning
Quality & Customer Support
  • Ensure repairs are completed accurately, safely, and in accordance with company standards
  • Review completed work orders, repair documentation, and maintenance records for accuracy
  • Assist with preparing repair estimates, service recommendations, and technical guidanceCommunicate professionally with operations teams, vendors, and customers regarding repair status and maintenance needs
  • Support warranty administration and vendor service programs as applicable
Inventory & Administrative Support
  • Coordinate ordering and inventory of parts, tools, shop supplies, and maintenance materials
  • Review vendor invoices and support inventory accuracy initiatives
  • Maintain organized maintenance records, inspection reports, and work orders
  • Utilize maintenance management software and business systems to track repairs and equipment performance
Safety & Compliance
  • Promote and maintain a safety‑first culture throughout the shop
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and PPE requirements
  • Conduct routine safety inspections and reinforce safe work practices
  • Maintain clean, organized, and efficient shop, warehouse, and yard work areas
  • Investigate equipment incidents and implement corrective actions as needed
Team Development
  • Train, mentor, and onboard mechanics and service technicians
  • Share technical knowledge and best practices to improve team performance
  • Support employee development through coaching and performance feedback
  • Partner with management to identify training opportunities and succession planning initiatives
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

  • Strong understanding of hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and fuel systems
  • Experience using diagnostic equipment and computer‑assisted troubleshooting systems
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and maintenance management software
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) communication skills are a plus
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Work is performed in shop, warehouse, yard, and field service environments
  • Frequent exposure to machinery, moving equipment, noise, dust, oils, lubricants, and varying weather conditions
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and perform physically demanding work throughout the shift
  • Ability to lift and move parts, tools, and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds
  • Frequent use of hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop machinery
  • May require overtime, emergency repairs, or weekend work based on operational needs
