Job summary

Volunteers of America Los Angeles is seeking a Lead Maintenance Technician to oversee repairs, maintenance and construction at VOALA sites in Los Angeles. This on-site, full-time role reports to the Maintenance Manager and requires planning, supervising staff, and ensuring safety and quality across projects.

Minimum of four years in facilities maintenance or construction with leadership experience is required. A California driver’s license is preferred.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Preferred training in a Construction Trade specialty (plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC, etc.).
  • California driver’s license preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and executes repair, maintenance and construction projects at VOALA sites.
  • Leads facility maintenance staff; provides leadership and training.
  • Performs electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry repairs and related maintenance tasks.
  • Maintains records including work orders and invoices; coordinates with vendors.
  • On-site work required; conducts routine inspections of properties.

JOB SUMMARY AND PURPOSE

Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the Lead Maintenance Technician has responsibility for oversight of construction, repairs and maintenance operations for designated VOALA sites. This position requires the ability to work flexible hours.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Plans and executes repair, maintenance and construction projects at an apartment complex or program facility
  • Leads facility maintenance staff; provides leadership, directs work, oversees employee performance and provides staff training
  • Performs various facility maintenance repairs and maintenance tasks including, but not limited to, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and carpentry, assembles maintenance team for larger projects/repairs
  • Performs inspections and reports routine and other needed repairs, prioritizes maintenance action
  • Maintains records including but not limited to work orders, supply receipts, and other project related information
  • Works with vendors as well as program participants and/or tenants, as applicable
  • Other duties as assigned
ESSENTIAL ABILITY ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Ability to work and deal with difficult, uncooperative, and potentially aggressive clients as VOALA serves the neediest of the needy in our programs, which may include clients with homelessness, mental illness, substance abuse, recently released from incarceration, and other challenges.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Services for this position must be provided on-site. As a result, the position requires incumbents to report to work on-site each day of active employment.
  • Plans and executes both routine maintenance and required facility repair projects, assigning Maintenance Technicians and teams as appropriate
  • Oversee all work performed by maintenance staff, coordinate completion of work orders
  • Performs repairs as needed
  • Maintain work records and work orders
  • Conducts regular inspections of apartment complex
  • Other duties as required and may be subject to change
MANDATED REPORTER

As service providers to the underprivileged and vulnerable in our community, all employees are considered Mandated Reporters, and must report any instance of physical or sexual abuse to proper authorities.

Qualifications
REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to pass a fingerprint clearance, background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment and education verifications
  • Ability to perform under circumstances of possible emotional stress and conflicts dealing with difficult, uncooperative, and potentially aggressive clients as VOALA serves the neediest of the needy in our programs which may include clients with homelessness, mental-illness, substance abuse, recently released from incarceration and other challenges.
EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in facilities maintenance or construction, with proven skill in a construction specialty (plumbing, electrical, masonry, carpentry, HVAC, for example)
  • Experience leading a team of maintenance or construction workers.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Formal training in a Construction Trade specialty (plumbing, electrical, masonry, carpentry, HVAC, etc.)
  • Current California driver's license and clean driving record
