Job summary

The Michigan Department of Corrections is hiring a Maintenance Mechanic to maintain, repair, and install mechanical system components inside a correctional facility. The role includes servicing heating systems, pumps, and associated equipment, using independent judgment and working with minimal supervision.

You will hire, train, and supervise prisoner work crews, inspect their work, and perform duties both inside and outside the secure perimeter on a multi-level facility.

Qualifications

• Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school.
• Two years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the mechanical or electrical trades.
• Four years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the mechanical or electrical trades, including two years equivalent to a Maintenance Mechanic 8.
• Five years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the mechanical or electrical trades, including one year equivalent to a Maintenance Mechanic E9.
• Completion of a recognized program in vocational training for the mechanical or electrical trades may be substituted for two years of experience assisting skilled trades workers.

Responsibilities

• Maintain, repair, and install mechanical system components within a correctional facility.
• Hire, train, and supervise prisoner work crews.
• Inspect the work completed by prisoner crews and supervise without direct supervision.
• Work both outside and inside the secure perimeter of a multi-level facility.
