Job summary

The Jackson Laboratory seeks a Maintenance Mechanic III in Bar Harbor to support data centers, animal colonies, and essential facilities on a 24/7 basis. You will lead mechanical systems design, commissioning, and preventive maintenance, mentoring junior technicians, and ensuring safety and compliance across operations.

Responsibilities include coordinating projects, analyzing failures, and maintaining thorough records while traveling to support maintenance at other sites as needed.

Qualifications

• Expert-level knowledge of mechanical principles.
• Strong analytical skills for effective problem-solving.
• Ability to operate and maintain complex mechanical systems in critical environments, CMMS usage, read and interpret engineering drawings, wiring diagrams.
• Demonstrates willingness to learn and apply new technical skills in facility maintenance and operations.
• Excellent verbal and written communication for collaboration and documentation.
• Leadership and mentoring abilities expected for Level III technicians.
• Trade licenses and certifications are a plus; confined-space cert within 6 months.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design, programming, and commissioning of process equipment and other mechanical systems.
• Serve as primary technical liaison for specification, design, installation and commissioning of new construction and renovation projects.
• Develop and implement preventive maintenance strategies and system performance benchmarks.
• Conduct root cause analysis of system failures and implement corrective actions.
• Train and mentor junior and mid-level technicians.
• Ensure compliance with institutional safety and environmental standards.
• Utilize CMMS to document maintenance activities, calibrations, and system changes, and generate reports.
• Maintain detailed records for audits, inspections, and performance reviews.
• Participate in rotating on-call shifts and respond to on-campus emergencies within one hour, 24/7.
• Perform other duties, including night/weekend/holiday shift work.
• Occasional travel may be required for training and support at other sites.
