Job Description

The Lead Locate Technician is responsible for leading a group of assigned employees within their team, maintaining and protecting their area of coverage while following company policies and safety regulations. The role involves accurately locating underground facilities—including telephone communication lines, electric power lines, cable television lines, gas lines, fiber optic lines, water lines, and sewer lines—and assisting the team in achieving these objectives. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with client and state requirements, observing, locating, marking, and documenting underground and exposed utility locations, and managing the day‑to‑day operations of the locating team.

• Oversee daily scheduling of contractors and subcontractors.
• Route tickets to ensure optimized efficiency.
• Develop and execute daily production plans; provide assistance when needed.
• Review prior day’s documents and reports.
• Review daily expectations and safety messages and adjust as necessary.
• Audit documents for accuracy.
• Ensure all documents comply with client regulations.
• Establish client quality assurance; resolve any issues.
• Verify accuracy of team members’ timesheets and attendance.
• Locate underground facilities using a transmitter and other detection equipment.
• Work and walk over all terrain types—including construction zones, residential, commercial, industrial, and rural areas—in all weather conditions.
• Interpret job order tickets, blueprints, and maps to route and perform duties efficiently.
• Perform locates, including emergency/on‑call locates during regular, overtime, and holiday hours as needed.
• Conduct work in a timely, professional, and efficient manner while communicating effectively with customers, co‑employees, and third parties.
• Maintain communication with management, contractors, and utility customers to ensure a damage‑free environment.
• Demonstrate knowledge of relevant technology and tools.
• Collaborate with others in a supervised team environment.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
• Multiple years of utility locating experience.
• Documentation of excellent quality ratio within the locating industry.
• Experience using multiple types of utility locating equipment.
• Strong problem‑solving skills.
• Ability to read, interpret, and decipher multiple types of prints.
• Experience with vacuum truck operations (A+ preferred).
• Physical ability to lift over 50 lbs and walk/stand for extended periods.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Pass a background screening (no violations within the last 3 years).
• Pass a DOT drug test.
