Teams meet 2-4 times annually in interesting locations worldwide to align on strategy and execution.

The Canonical Kernel Team seeks talented industry veterans with a proven track record in operating systems kernel development or low-level system engineering to lead the architecture, implementation, and delivery of key aspects of the Ubuntu Linux kernel, including:

  1. Driving engagements with Silicon and Cloud partners for optimal platform solutions
  2. Leading mitigation of vulnerabilities and active kernel hardening
  3. Architecting performance and correctness enhancements for Ubuntu Linux
  4. Streamlining packaging and distribution of challenging third-party components
  5. Developing scalable delivery methods meeting quality standards and schedules

While not a formal managerial role, the candidate should possess strong leadership skills to guide engineers and coordinate with external teams. We seek individuals with deep technical expertise in operating system kernels and distributions, and a proactive leadership approach. Experience equivalent to 15+ years in the industry is preferred.

Location: Remote roles available in every timezone, with some responsibilities linked to specific regions.

Role Responsibilities
  • Set technical direction and lead delivery of Ubuntu Linux kernel initiatives
  • Coordinate with management and teams to track progress and initiatives
  • Collaborate daily with Kernel Team leadership to maintain Ubuntu’s top position in Linux distributions
Candidate Requirements
  • Self-motivated, well-organized, and able to thrive remotely
  • Excellent English communication skills
  • Expertise in C programming
  • Experience with *nix kernel and distributions; Linux experience preferred
  • Proficiency in Python and Bash scripting
  • Deep understanding of git version control
  • Experience with software packaging formats; Ubuntu/Debian/Snap experience advantageous
  • Willingness to travel internationally at least twice a year for up to two weeks
Nice-to-Have Skills
  • Background in RTOS and real-time performance analysis
  • Experience with kernel patching and debugging
  • Knowledge of device drivers, BSPs, and low-level system engineering
  • Experience with Rust in Linux kernel development
