Job summary

Job description

This is advanced skilled water safety work at City swimming pool facilities. This position copes with large groups, including children, monitoring both visually and audible to insure safety, facility rules and health standards. Employees in this class are responsible for safeguarding patrons at swimming pools facilities and instructing water safety classes. Duties include enforcing rules and regulations governing use of facilities, preventing injury or loss of life, and administering first aid or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation as necessary. Work is performed in accordance with departmental policies and regulations concerning public use of swimming areas and established water safety practices. Supervision is received from the Aquatic Facilities Manager who reviews work through personal observations for effective application of lifeguarding techniques.

Supervises and schedule lifeguard and recreation staff and other personnel assigned to the pool.

Communicates effectively and courteously with public in person, writing or by phone.

Enforces policies, rules and regulations governing the conduct of patrons. Applies appropriate disciplinary action for violations. Reports all disciplinary problems to the Aquatics Facilities Manager.

Observes patrons and identifies potentially dangerous or hazardous situations to prevent accidents. Displays sound judgment and makes on the spot quick decisions to insure safety of all users of the pool areas.

Reports potential physical hazards, unsafe conditions and complaints to the Aquatics Facilities Manager.

Rescues patrons in distress; administers first aid or CPR as required. Must be a strong swimmer to assist in rescue operations.

Checks resuscitator, first aid kit, backboards, gas masks to assure proper operation; may perform minor repairs.

Maintains student and facility records.

Performs daily monitoring of facility equipment and chemical testing.

Ensures the proper maintenance of water and deck areas; ensures that restrooms, showers and locker rooms are clean at all times.

Operates water chemistry, water testing and filtration systems; performs minor repairs.

Assist recreation staff in case of shortage of staff or in emergencies.

Assist Aquatic Facilities Manager in completing forms for training and sanitation.

Informs Aquatic Facilities Manager when supplies and/or maintenance are needed.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of approved lifeguarding and lifesaving practices and techniques; knowledge of first aid and CPR; knowledge of safe equipment operation and maintenance, including but limited to valves, vacuum pumps, and sprayers; knowledge of the rules and regulations and physical layout of the aquatic facility of assignment; knowledge of public relations principles and techniques; knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.

Ability to react promptly and correctly in emergency situations; ability and skill in swimming; ability and skill to administer first aid and CPR; ability to utilize approved lifesaving techniques in the rescue of distressed patrons; ability to detect potentially dangerous or hazardous situations at swimming pool facilities; ability to multi-task; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to accurately complete assignments in a timely fashion; ability to organize schedule of staff and work duties.



Education & Experience Requirements:High school diploma or GED. Must possess certifications in CPR, First Aid, Lifeguarding, and Water Safety Instructor. Lifeguard Instructor Trainer certification is a plus. Two (2) years of experience as a Lifeguard or Lifeguard Water Safety Instructor, one (1) season of managerial experience of an aquatic facility/staff, and preparing basic reports. Must meet a vision standard of 20/20 corrected. Successful completion of the City’s lifeguard skills test will be required prior to employment.Applicants must be able to work varying shifts, including holidays and weekends.
