Job summary

Elk Grove Park District is seeking a Lead Lifeguard for the Pavilion Aquatics Center to ensure patron safety and respond to emergencies. The role supports year-round operations with morning hours and potential weekend shifts.

Responsibilities include zone monitoring, rule enforcement, POS processing, and greeting members. Must maintain CPR/First Aid and lifeguard certification through ongoing training. This is an on-site position with a focus on public safety.

Qualifications

  • Must pass Lifeguard certification prerequisites (swim 200 yards, tread water 2 min, retrieve 10 lb object).
  • CPR and First Aid certification required during onboarding.
  • Ability to work with diverse patrons and respond calmly under pressure.

Responsibilities

  • Recognize and respond to emergencies per the Emergency Action Plan.
  • Process daily admissions and memberships at the cashier desk.
  • Attend 4 hours of in-service training per month to maintain certifications and lifeguarding skills.
  • Maintain equipment and assist with pool area cleaning and safety checks.
  • Communicate effectively with staff and the public, and manage shift scheduling as needed.

Pay Rate: Starting at $17.00 per hour
Hours: Mon - Fri 5:45am-4:15pm

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision of the Aquatics Operations Supervisor, the Lead Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of patrons and responding to emergencies at the Pavilion Aquatics Center. The Lead Lifeguard works during the off season, primarily 6 am - 4 pm; Lead Lifeguard hours may be supplemented with Lifeguard shifts during the weekends, evenings, and summer to make the position a year round position.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Ensure patron safety by actively scanning assigned zones of the pool and enforcing rules
  • Recognize and respond to emergencies and assist patrons in distress as outlined by the Emergency Action Plan
  • Process Point of Sale transactions, including selling daily admission and memberships, as well as registering participants for programs
  • Manage the Cashier Desk including greeting members and guests, checking participants in, and answering phone calls
    • Attend 4 hours of in-service training per month to maintain certification requirements and practice all CPR, First Aid, lifeguarding skills
    • Inspect lifeguard equipment at the start of each shift to ensure it is in good working order
    • Work with other staff to perform routine cleaning/maintenance throughout the duration of each shift
    • Bring and use proper sun protection on every shift that includes outdoor rotation
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Help set up for programs and special events
  • Utilize scheduling software to communicate monthly availability and view scheduled shifts
  • Perform the job safely and in compliance with district policies, procedures, work and safety rules
  • Be familiar with the safe operation of any equipment necessary in accomplishing required tasks
  • Follow all Federal and State Labor Laws
  • Maintain a commitment to the operation of safe and effective aquatic environment
  • Go beyond the expected to provide exemplary customer service to patrons, including sharing information about the pool rules, EGPD programs, facilities, and
  • Responsible for other duty as deemed appropriate by the Pool Managers, Aquatics Supervisors, or Aquatics Manager
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
  • Responsible for the safety of the general public in the pool and on the pool deck including the ability to make decisions to assure safety in and around the aquatic facilities
  • Able to work under stressful situations when First Aid or CPR is required, including the ability to respond quickly and accurately to any and all emergencies
  • Must work closely with co-workers
  • Subject to modified/flexible work schedule
  • Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds
  • Work in a wide range of weather conditions which can include cold, rain, humidity, and extreme heat
  • The Lead Lifeguard must be safety conscientious and use good judgment
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Critical thinking and effective decision making skills

  • Ability to maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees
  • Ability to pass the lifeguard certification prerequisites:
    • Swim 200 yards without stopping (freestyle and breaststroke)
    • Tread water for 2 minutes (1 minute without using hands)
    • Retrieve a 10 pound object from the deep end of the pool (12 feet)
  • Ability to pass the Lifeguard Practical Test and Written Test (staff will be certified after successfully completing the on-boarding process)
  • Ability to pass vision test (with or without corrective eyewear)
  • Ability to learn Point of Sale Software
  • Must be 15 years of age or older by the first day of work; candidates who are 15 must obtain a Work Permit before they can begin work
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Must have or be able to successfully complete Lifeguard certification
