Position Summary

The Lead Lifeguard is responsible for overseeing the pool area, including lifeguarding, chemical testing and recording, equipment maintenance, and ensuring overall cleanliness. Acts as the primary contact for aquatics-related inquiries and issues in the absence of director-level staff.

Knowledge and Skills

Must demonstrate understanding of member service, effective time management, excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to embody a welcoming attitude, determination, and a nurturing spirit. Understand ethical behavior and uphold high standards of organizational accountability.

Essential Functions
  1. General
  • Maintain a neat and clean pool area.
  • Respond promptly to patron concerns.
  • Report incidents and concerns to the Aquatics Director or Associate Director.
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Follow all policies and procedures outlined in employee and procedural handbooks.
  • Pool Operation
    • Maintain appropriate chemical levels and record conditions.
    • Perform maintenance duties as assigned.
  • Lifeguard
    • Monitor pools during all activities following YMCA procedures.
    • Be familiar with emergency procedures and prepared to act.
    • Maintain safety equipment on person at all times.
    • Perform rescues and provide care when necessary.
  • Lead Lifeguard
    • Ensure staff compliance with YMCA policies.
    • Serve as the primary contact for aquatics customer service issues in the absence of senior staff.
    • Ensure compliance with health regulations.
    • Report supply needs and repairs to the Director or designee.
    Qualifications

    Certifications:

    1. Frederick County Pool Operator’s License
    2. American Red Cross Deep Water Lifeguarding Certification (including CPR/AED and First Aid)
    3. Emergency Oxygen Administration (must be acquired within 90 days of hire)

    Additional requirements include the ability to understand instructions, communicate effectively, and possess at least one year of lifeguarding experience. Must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or equivalent.
