POSITION SUMMARY:

The Lead Lifeguard is responsible for overseeing the pool area, including lifeguarding, testing, recording chemicals, maintaining equipment, and ensuring overall cleanliness of the pool areas. They serve as the primary contact for aquatics-related inquiries and issues in the absence of director-level staff.

Knowledge and Skills

Candidates must demonstrate understanding of member service, effective time management, excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. They should exemplify a “Y-Voice” reflecting determination, genuine concern, welcoming attitude, hopefulness, and nurturing spirit. Additionally, understanding ethical behavior and maintaining high standards of organizational accountability are essential.

Essential Functions
  1. General
    • Maintain a neat and clean pool area.
    • Respond promptly to patron concerns.
    • Report incidents to the Aquatics Director or Associate Director.
    • Attend staff meetings and training sessions as required.
    • Follow all policies in the Employee, Aquatics, and Pool Operator Handbooks.
  2. Pool Operation
    • Maintain proper chemical levels.
    • Test and record pool water conditions; take corrective actions as needed.
    • Maintain knowledge of the pump room.
    • Perform maintenance duties when assigned.
  3. Lifeguard
    • Monitor pools during aquatic activities following YMCA procedures.
    • Be familiar with and ready to use emergency procedures.
    • Keep lifeguard safety equipment on person at all times.
    • Perform rescues and provide appropriate care when necessary.
  4. Lead Lifeguard
    • Ensure staff adherence to YMCA policies.
    • Act as the primary contact for aquatics customer service issues in the absence of senior staff.
    • Ensure compliance with health regulations.
    • Report supply needs and repairs to the Aquatics Director or designee.
Qualifications

Requirements:

  1. Certifications:
    1. Frederick County Pool Operator’s License
    2. American Red Cross Deep Water Lifeguarding Certification (including CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid)
    3. Administering Emergency Oxygen (training to be completed within 90 days of hire)
  2. Ability to understand and follow instructions, interpret policies, and communicate effectively.
  3. Must be at least 18 years old.
  4. High school diploma or equivalent required.
  5. Minimum one year of lifeguard experience or equivalent.
