Job Summary

Lead Laser Engineering Technician, Leonardo DRS, Inc., San Diego, CA. Job Responsibilities
  • Involved in the development, characterization, and improvement of laser systems.
  • Assist in defining engineering requirements, specifying designs and components, and assembling and validating new lasers or upgrades to existing systems.
  • Identify optical components—including lenses, laser materials, fiber optics, and related items—and assist with their specification, purchase, and qualification.
  • Support engineering with complex duties and hands‑on tasks, working independently on a weekly basis.
  • Possess competent technical expertise and be comfortable with shop/laboratory equipment.
  • Design, build, procure, and coordinate the implementation of new or improved machines, tools, fixtures, and material‑handling equipment.
  • Complete process documentation, bills of materials, route sheets, and other required documents.
  • Review project instructions and drawings to determine test specifications, procedures, objectives, and equipment, and support design for manufacture.
  • Devise, fabricate, and assemble new or modified electrical and mechanical components or assemblies.
  • Set up and conduct tests of units and components.
  • Analyze test results relative to design and test objectives, adjusting equipment to meet specifications.
  • Record test procedures and results, including numerical and graphical data, and recommend changes to product or test methods.
  • Develop documentation to maintain equipment and contribute to ongoing improvement.
  • Lead technician teams in development or mentor other technicians, providing hands‑on feedback to engineers.
  • Support, communicate, reinforce, and defend the organization’s mission, values, and culture.
  • Assist in developing plant layouts, manufacturing methods, and process improvements.
  • Coordinate maintenance projects and mentor less experienced technicians.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of six years of experience in a related field.
  • Associate’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

The expected pay scale for this position is $78,359.81 per year to $110,000.00 per year. Compensation may be adjusted if the role’s scope, location, or requirements change during the hiring process.
