Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Newsletter & Intranet: Own the Buying Office newsletters end to end, content planning, writing, editing, coordination, and distribution.
  • Buying Office Communications: Develop stories and communications that highlight evolving priorities and drive engagement.
  • Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR): Support internal and external CSR campaigns with written, visual, and video content.
  • Content Creation & Storytelling: Write clear, compelling content for internal audiences and shape narratives for channels.
  • Tools & Standards: Maintain brand voice, adhere to AP Style and Ross Stores standards, use approved AI tools responsibly.

About this opportunity...

Lead, Internal Communications & Engagement is a hands‑on communications professional responsible for developing clear, timely, and engaging content that connects Associates to business priorities, culture, and key moments. Based in New York, this role supports both East and West Coast communications efforts through the planning, development, and execution of internal communications across multiple channels, including newsletters, intranet content, leadership messages, event communications, associate campaigns, and storytelling initiatives.

Working closely with the Senior Director, Communications & Engagement and key business partners, including HR and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the Lead serves as a trusted communications advisor who translates complex information into clear, actionable content. This role helps strengthen communications planning, editorial standards, channel management, and process consistency while ensuring seamless execution of communication priorities across the organization. Success in this role requires strong writing and editorial skills, sound judgment, effective prioritization, and the ability to manage projects independently from concept through execution.

The base salary range for this role is $75,000-$95,000. The base salary range is dependent on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, qualifications, relevant education, certifications, seniority, and location. The range listed is just one component of the total compensation package for employees. Other rewards vary by position and location.

What you will do and what you will learn...
Newsletter & Intranet
  • Own the Buying Office newsletters end to end, in alignment with the West Coast Communications Lead, including content planning, writing, editing, stakeholder coordination, and distribution.
  • Translate business updates into clear, engaging newsletter content with a consistent editorial voice, cadence, and reader experience across Buying Office communications.
  • Develop intranet articles for the Buying Offices and, as needed, for Corporate in partnership with the West Coast Communications channel owner.
  • Use feedback, engagement insights, and channel performance indicators to improve Buying Office newsletter and intranet content quality, relevance, and effectiveness over time.
  • Serve as backfill across newsletter and intranet content channels when needed to maintain timely, consistent communications.
Buying Office Communications
  • Serve as a communications partner to Buying Office HR and business partners, managing communications tied to business priorities, Associate programs, organizational updates, and key initiatives.
  • Develop stories and communications that highlight how the organization is evolving, reinforce key priorities, and bring the work and impact of the Buying Offices to life.
  • Help prioritize and sequence communications so Associates receive the right information at the right time through the right channels.
  • Draft leadership communications and provide hands‑on support for local initiatives, events, campaigns.
  • Support communications during urgent or rapidly changing situations, using sound judgment to prioritize requests and elevate alignment needs as appropriate.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
  • Serve as the communications partner for the CSR team, supporting internal and external promotion of CSR initiatives.
  • Develop written, visual, and video content for CSR campaigns across internal and external channels.
Content Creation & Storytelling
  • Write clear, compelling short‑and long‑form content for internal audiences, including articles, leader messages, event recaps, presentations, and Associate stories.
  • Shape content into strong narratives that are easy to understand, audience‑appropriate, and aligned to the intended channel.
  • Apply strong editorial judgment to simplify complex information, strengthen key messages, and ensure a consistent voice.
  • Support multimedia communications, including leader videos, visual storytelling, and presentations.
Tools & Standards
  • Ensure a consistent brand voice and adhere to AP Style and Ross/dd's brand standards across all communications.
  • Use company‑approved AI tools responsibly to improve drafting, editing, planning, and workflow efficiency while maintaining accuracy, confidentiality, and brand standards.
  • Stay informed about internal communications practices, employee engagement trends, and emerging tools that may improve quality or efficiency.
  • Maintain documented processes, editorial calendars, templates, and coverage plans to support consistency, continuity, and backup coverage across priority communications channels.
What you need to be successful...
  • BA/BS degree
  • 5+ years of relevant communications experience with strong business writing, storytelling, editorial, and project management skills. Employer brand / recruitment experience a plus.
  • Highly self‑motivated, resourceful, and enthusiastic with a customer‑service mindset. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines, adapt quickly to changing priorities, and thrive in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities, with a portfolio of clear, compelling content for diverse audiences.
  • Exercises sound judgment, professionalism, and discretion, especially when handling sensitive or confidential information.
  • Comfort owning work end to end, including planning, prioritizing, executing, and refining content independently.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills; able to build trust, work effectively across functions, and support team initiatives in a matrixed environment.
  • Experience and comfort using company‑approved generative AI tools, such as Microsoft Copilot or similar platforms, to improve drafting, editing, planning, and workflow efficiency.
  • Proficiency with Windows 10, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Office 365, SharePoint Online, WordPress, InDesign, Illustrator, Canva, and Acoustic (for Associate messaging).
