Job summary

RigUp is seeking a Lead I&C Commissioning Technician to lead hands-on instrumentation and controls commissioning across geothermal facilities. The role involves directing contract labor, O&M personnel, and technicians on-site, supporting DCS/SCADA testing and SIS validation from pre-commissioning to turnover.

The incumbent will travel fleet-wide, align with the Commissioning Manager, and provide day-to-day direction during campaigns.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of I&C commissioning or instrumentation technician experience in industrial environments.
• Demonstrated hands-on experience calibrating and testing pressure, temperature, flow, and level instrumentation.
• Working knowledge of DCS, PLC, and SCADA systems at a technician level.
• Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, and instrument data sheets.
• Experience directing contract or mixed-workforce field crews.
• Strong written documentation skills and calibration records management.

Responsibilities

• Conduct point-to-point checks, loop checks, and signal validation for instrument loops and document results.
• Support functional testing of control system I/O, DCS/PLC logic verification, and SCADA point commissioning with the commissioning team.
• Support SIS functional testing as directed and maintain proof test documentation.
• Troubleshoot instrumentation faults and coordinate resolution with engineers or vendors.
• Participate in wellpad and surface facility commissioning involving I&C scope and interfaces.

Job Description:

The Lead I&C Commissioning Technician is a working lead within the commissioning crew, responsible for the hands‑on execution of instrumentation and controls commissioning activities and for directing the contract labor, O&M personnel, and technicians working within their scope. This is a field role. The Lead Tech installs, inspects, calibrates, and tests field instrumentation and supports control system loop checking, functional testing, and DCS/SCADA/SIS validation activities from pre‑commissioning through system turnover. The position reports to the Commissioning Manager (CxM).

This role is fleet-mobile. Assignments follow the active commissioning schedule across the portfolio of geothermal facilities. As the fleet scales, Lead Technicians will administratively anchor to the regional commissioning management layer for performance management and career development, while receiving day‑to‑day operational direction from the site CxM during each campaign.

Responsibilities:

Field Execution:

• Install, inspect, calibrate, and test field instrumentation including pressure, temperature, flow, level, and analytical devices per applicable instrument data sheets and calibration procedures
• Conduct point‑to‑point checks, loop checks, and signal validation for all assigned instrument loops; document results accurately against loop sheets and commissioning checklists
• Support functional testing of control system I/O, DCS and PLC logic verification, and SCADA point commissioning in coordination with the IC Controls Commissioning Engineer
• Support Safety Instrumented System (SIS) functional testing activities as directed by the IC Controls Commissioning Engineer; maintain accurate proof test documentation
• Troubleshoot instrumentation faults, signal errors, wiring discrepancies, and control logic issues during commissioning; document findings and coordinate resolution with the appropriate engineer or vendor
• Participate in wellpad and surface facility commissioning activities involving I&C scope, including wellhead instrumentation, chemical injection systems, and downhole monitoring interfaces

Crew Direction:

• Direct the day‑to‑day work of contract I&C technicians, O&M instrument technicians, and commissioning technicians assigned to their scope
• Coordinate with DCS, PLC, and SCADA vendor field service personnel on control system commissioning activities; maintain oversight of vendor scope and documentation
• Participate in pre-task briefs, job hazard analyses, and daily crew coordination meetings; enforce work authorization and LOTO/PTW compliance within the I&C scope
• Identify scope conflicts, sequencing issues, and resource constraints within the I&C work front; elevate to the CxM and Commissioning Coordinator promptly

Documentation and Quality:

• Complete calibration records, loop check sheets, and commissioning test records accurately and on time; documentation completeness is a gate requirement for system advancement
• Maintain configuration control within the I&C scope; deviations from design are documented through the management‑of‑change process before work proceeds
• Identify and log punch list items within the I&C scope; verify closure physically before signing off

Safety:

• Maintain stop‑work authority within the I&C work front
• Enforce LOTO, PTW, and SIMOPS compliance for all I&C work within scope, including energized instrument work and control system bypasses

Skills and Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

• 5 or more years of I&C commissioning or instrumentation technician experience in power generation, oil and gas, chemical process, or equivalent industrial plant environments
• Demonstrated hands‑on experience calibrating and testing pressure, temperature, flow, and level instrumentation using standard calibration equipment
• Working knowledge of DCS, PLC, and/or SCADA systems at a technician level: I/O verification, signal tracing, and basic logic troubleshooting
• Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, instrument data sheets, and control narratives
• Experience directing contract or mixed‑workforce field crews
• Strong written documentation skills; calibration records and loop check documentation require precision
• Established industrial safety practices including LOTO, PTW, and energized instrument work procedures

Preferred Qualifications:

• Associate degree or technical certificate in Instrumentation, Controls, Electronics, or a related discipline
• Experience commissioning utility‑scale power generation or process facilities
• Exposure to geothermal, ORC, or combined‑cycle power plant I&C systems
• Familiarity with Safety Instrumented Systems and IEC 61511 functional safety testing requirements
• ISA Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) or equivalent certification

Work Schedule:

• Extended hours during critical startup and control system commissioning periods are expected
