Qualifications

  • Preferred: EPA HVAC Certification Type – Universal.

Job Description

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

This position installs, maintains, and repairs commercial and residential HVAC systems in all buildings. Repairs and performs Plant Maintenance on large Hydronic, VRV, VRF, Citi-Multi systems, and Reheat Systems. Coordinates with other construction teams to install HVAC systems at the proper time in the construction process.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution or Journeyman equivalent technical certifications or vocational licenses in HVAC trade
  • Formal training as an HVAC Technician or similar / equivalent in years of journeyman level experience above 10 years in HVAC field of study.

Preferred:

  • Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in HVACR.
  • Four (4) year apprenticeship program.

Licenses, Certifications, and other Requirements

Required:

  • Must pass a drug test and background check.
  • Must have a valid Georgia driver’s license.

Preferred:

  • HVAC EPA Certification Type – Universal
  • State License: Restricted or Nonrestricted HVACR

  • Ability to read blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematic drawings, and/or engineering instructions to install HVAC units.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of HVACR theory and components to resolve engineering issues.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written communications.
  • Ability to work with principals, administrators, and other school personnel.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Inspects electrical connections, contactors, relays, and operating/safety controls.
  • Reviews and uses manufacturer’s recommendations for startup of new equipment.
  • Tests, repairs, and/or replaces all operating and safety controls.
  • Services, tests, installs, and repairs chill water pumps and condenser water pumps; cooling towers and cooling tower pumps; belts, bearings, shafts, and sheaves on colling towers and blower assemblies; heat pump, and straight cool split systems.
  • Checks and adds the proper refrigerant charge and oil levels on any and all HVAC equipment.
  • Inspects water cooled and air-cooled chillers; and troubleshoots, tests, and repairs as needed.
  • Tests cycle operating controls; troubleshoots, repairs, and replaces unloaders.
  • Services and repairs of all makes of air cooled and water-cooled chillers.
  • Services, repairs, and installs Liebert units (Computer room systems), gas heating systems, and package units.
  • Services, repairs, and installs all makes and models of Variable Frequency Drives (VFD’s); all makes and models of gas fired boilers; all makes and models of gas fired water heaters, tankless water heaters, and electric water heaters; all makes and models of ERV’s, ERU’s, forced air units, and make up air units; and all VRV, VRF, Citi-Multi, and Mini-Split systems.
  • Assists with construction/remodel plan reviews of HVAC projects.
  • Verifies work has been completed and work orders are closed out properly.
  • Works with outside vendors, engineers, contractors, and consultants on projects affecting HVAC Systems.
  • Supports the Director of Maintenance with Department goals and visions and help implement them.
  • Performs regular inspections to identify defects and schedule replacement of HVAC Systems.
  • Performs system testing to evaluate performance and functionality of HVAC Systems.
  • Maintains inventory control of HVAC components and tools.
  • Maintains documentations of system installation and maintenance procedures.
  • Oversees inspections of contractor work in renovations and new construction projects.
  • Identifies, estimates, and prioritizes trade related improvements for district properties.
  • Promotes and follows all Board of Education policies as well as building and department procedures.
  • Identifies and resolves equipment malfunctions.
  • Works with manufacturers or field representatives as necessary to procure replacement parts.
  • Recognizes the importance of safety in the workplace, follows safety rules, practices safe work habits, utilizes appropriate safety equipment, and reports unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.
  • Performs other duties as necessary for the effectiveness of the organization.

Work Environment

Employees in this classification are normally exposed to a typical school or related campus environment. There will be prolonged periods of standing or walking, and there may be frequent bending, crawling, stooping, or stretching. There are occasions that require the lifting or pulling of equipment or supplies, running, or other demanding physical activity. Reading, listening, writing, and speaking are requirements. There are occasional exceptional physical or sensory demands that may include exposure to unfavorable or potentially dangerous conditions.
