Job summary

WSP is seeking a Lead HVAC Mechanical Engineer in Hamilton, NJ to join our Property & Buildings Team. You will lead mechanical design, perform load calculations, and ensure code compliance across project phases from concept to operation.

You will coordinate with architects, owners, and sub-consultants, develop construction plans, and deliver comprehensive technical reports. A professional engineer license and 7–10 years of experience are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited program.
• 7–10 years of relevant post-education experience in engineering for a consulting firm.
• Engineer license required.
• Comprehensive knowledge of code compliance requirements and industry standards.
• Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
• Experience with Deltek or Project Resource Management software preferred.

Responsibilities

• Apply high-level mechanical engineering techniques to identify improvements across project phases.
• Perform design work, research, site condition inspections, and conformance with permits.
• Design mechanical systems and perform heating/cooling load calculations per QA/QC.
• Coordinate with owners, disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients for construction plans and cost estimates.
• Develop construction plans, safety/phasing plans, and updated layout plans.
• Involved from inception to completion in mechanical design and construction of buildings and infrastructure.
• Incorporate advanced technologies and modeling techniques for proper installation and operation.
• Coordinate, review and approve installation plans ensuring code compliance.
• Prepare technical reports and presentations to address engineering issues or opportunities.
• Attend meetings with architects, owners, and managers for current or future projects.
• Collaborate with professionals on federally/state funded projects and business development opportunities.
• Remain current with latest mechanical engineering practices.

Job description

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Lead HVAC Mechanical Engineer for our Hamilton, NJ office location to work with our Property & Buildings Team.

Your Impact

• Apply high-level mechanical engineering techniques and processes to identify improvements for various building and infrastructure project phases including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation.
• Perform professional mechanical engineering work and conduct research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, equipment, resources, building, infrastructure, usage, and mechanical systems to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
• Design mechanical systems including calculations of heating and cooling loads while adhering to the firm’s QA/QC process
• Select and layout mechanical equipment such as pumps, chiller, fans and boilers
• Develop construction and installation plans, specifications, and cost estimates; preparing construction safety and phasing plans, and updating infrastructure layout plans that require coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
• Involved from project inception to completion in the management of mechanical design and construction of building and infrastructure projects, including rehabilitation and reconstruction, new builds, operating specifications, building materials, phasing, and construction safety plans.
• Develop and incorporate advanced technologies, monitoring devices, building materials, modeling techniques, design requirements, load calculations, and operating strategies to account for the proper installation and functioning of equipment and systems; implementing future-ready solutions with mechanical engineering design standards.
• Coordinate, review and approve installation design plans, ensuring data integrity and work is compliant with all applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
• Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations that explain research, concepts, and recommendations to prevent, control, restore, or address engineering, design, and/or construction issues or opportunities.
• Analyze, evaluate, and interpret data obtained during field investigations, offering input with developing action plans for moderate- to high-level risk installation, equipment operations, and/or mitigation activities.
• Attend meetings with architects, owners and building managers to discuss future and or current projects
• Collaborate with professionals, other engineers, planners, and building and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded improvement and development projects, as well as proposal and business development opportunities.
• Remain current in latest mechanical engineering techniques and practices.
• Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
• Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited program, or closely related discipline.
• 7 to 10 years of relevant post education experience in engineering discipline and prior mechanical design experience for a consulting engineering firm.
• Engineer license required.
• Comprehensive knowledge and interpretation of code compliance requirements and industry standards
• Strong organizational, prioritization, decision making and analytical skills
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Strong influencing and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and in a highly collaborative team environment
• Ability to consistently set goals and meet deadlines and adapt to flexible responsibilities
• Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
• Experience with Deltek or Project Resource Management software is preferred
• Ability to meet and exceed client expectations

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Engineering.
• LEED certification desired.
• 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.
• Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.

Compensation

Expected Salary (all locations): $118,000- $176,000
