Job summary

WSP is seeking a Lead HVAC Mechanical Engineer for our Hamilton, NJ office to join the Property & Buildings Team. The role leads mechanical design efforts, guides project scope, and coordinates with PMs and senior engineers to deliver projects on time and within budget.

The successful candidate will provide expert HVAC design, oversee load calculations, equipment selection, and construction planning, while ensuring QA/QC compliance and adherence to codes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited program.
  • 7 to 10 years of relevant post-education experience for a consulting engineering firm.
  • Engineer license required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of code compliance requirements and industry standards.
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, decision making and analytical skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Apply high-level mechanical engineering techniques to improve building and infrastructure project phases.
  • Conduct site condition inspections to determine conformance with rules and permits.
  • Design mechanical systems including heating and cooling load calculations.
  • Select and layout mechanical equipment (pumps, chillers, fans, boilers).
  • Develop construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates; coordinate with owners and other parties.
  • Lead from inception through completion of mechanical design and construction projects.

This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Lead HVAC Mechanical Engineer for our Hamilton, NJ office location to work with our Property & Buildings Team.

The Lead Mechanical Engineer plans and conducts work requiring judgment, independent evaluation, selection and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria. Successfully completes small to medium engineering projects by organizing and controlling project elements. Works closely with the Project Managers (PM) or Senior Engineers for technical review and guidance.

Your Impact
  • Apply high-level mechanical engineering techniques and processes to identify improvements for various building and infrastructure project phases including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation.
  • Perform professional mechanical engineering work and conduct research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, equipment, resources, building, infrastructure, usage, and mechanical systems to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
  • Design mechanical systems including calculations of heating and cooling loads while adhering to the firm’s QA/QC process
  • Select and layout mechanical equipment such as pumps, chiller, fans and boilers
  • Develop construction and installation plans, specifications, and cost estimates; preparing construction safety and phasing plans, and updating infrastructure layout plans that require coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
  • Involved from project inception to completion in the management of mechanical design and construction of building and infrastructure projects, including rehabilitation and reconstruction, new builds, operating specifications, building materials, phasing, and construction safety plans.
  • Develop and incorporate advanced technologies, monitoring devices, building materials, modeling techniques, design requirements, load calculations, and operating strategies to account for the proper installation and functioning of equipment and systems; implementing future-ready solutions with mechanical engineering design standards.
  • Coordinate, review and approve installation design plans, ensuring data integrity and work is compliant with all applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations that explain research, concepts, and recommendations to prevent, control, restore, or address engineering, design, and/or construction issues or opportunities.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and interpret data obtained during field investigations, offering input with developing action plans for moderate- to high-level risk installation, equipment operations, and/or mitigation activities.
  • Attend meetings with architects, owners and building managers to discuss future and or current projects
  • Collaborate with professionals, other engineers, planners, and building and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded improvement and development projects, as well as proposal and business development opportunities.
  • Remain current in latest mechanical engineering techniques and practices.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited program, or closely related discipline.
  • 7 to 10 years of relevant post education experience in engineering discipline and prior mechanical design experience for a consulting engineering firm.
  • Engineer license required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and interpretation of code compliance requirements and industry standards
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, decision making and analytical skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong influencing and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and in a highly collaborative team environment
  • Ability to consistently set goals and meet deadlines and adapt to flexible responsibilities
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • Experience with Deltek or Project Resource Management software is preferred
  • Ability to meet and exceed client expectations
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • LEED certification desired.
  • 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.

Compensation:

Expected Salary (all locations): $118,000- $176,000

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
