Job summary

Weller Brothers is seeking a Lead Horticulturist to oversee daily crew tasks, manage turf and landscape maintenance, and communicate with clients. The role requires pesticide applicator licensure, physical fitness, and the ability to train team members in proper procedures.

The position is full-time, on-site in South Dakota, with benefits available after a probation period. A valid driver’s license is preferred and prior chemical application experience is a plus.

Qualifications

  • High school education required or GED equivalent.
  • Experience applying chemical treatments and pesticides preferred.
  • Must be capable of lifting up to required weights and performing physical tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day crew tasks including fertilizer, chemical applications, lawn mowing, irrigation installation and repairs.
  • Lead and train team members; ensure accurate time entry and payroll processing.
  • Communicate professionally with clients and educate them on turf care.
  • Maintain equipment, follow safety policies, and oversee inventory and receipts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and competency satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform this job.

Oversee day-to-day crew tasks including but not limited to fertilizer and chemical applications, lawn mowing, power raking, irrigation installation and repair, landscape bed maintenance, perimeter pest control applications, spring, and fall cleanups, and other lawn and landscape maintenance tasks.

Professionally communicate with clients.

Use knowledge of the turfgrass and landscape industry to inform and educate clients.

Must be legally licensed with a state-specific pesticide applicator license.

Acquires and stores pesticides; mixes or dilutes specified chemicals or materials according to directions; and applies them at the recommended rate.

Able to use outdoor maintenance and power equipment, a variety of hand tools, and legally operate a motor vehicle.

Willingness to work as part of a team or alone, in all weather conditions.

Ability to perform moderately heavy physical labor daily.

Installs, adjusts, and performs minor repairs on application equipment.

Instruct team members, as required, in applying sprays, dust, and other materials.

Follow uniform policy and all policies as specified in the Employee Handbook. Hold crew members accountable for following policies.

Retain, label, and submit all receipts timely and accurate.

Commit the hours necessary to make sure the job is done to satisfaction.

Make decisions that are in the best interest of the company.

Assist in maintaining all Weller Brothers equipment.

  • Ensure time cards are done correctly and approve them.
  • Assign duties to the team.
  • Lead by example.

Assist with Snow Removal in Winter.

Other duties are needed to help drive and fulfill the Weller Brothers Mission, including referring new team members for employment.

Requirements
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Minimum of one year experience in industry or related field.

Experience applying chemical applications.

Must be 18 years or older

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a team member to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Team members must be able to perform the following tasks during a typical 8+ hour day.

SEDENTARY WORK : Lifting up to 10#; occasionally lifting or carrying such articles as dockets, ledgers, and small tools. Work essentially involves sitting and is considered sedentary if only a small amount of walking and standing is necessary to carry out duties.

LIGHT WORK: Lifting up to 20#, frequently lifting or carrying objects up to 10#. Work is classified light if it requires walking or standing to a significant degree (regardless of weight lifted) or involves sitting most of the time with a degree of pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls.

LIGHT MEDIUM WORK: Lifting up to 30#; frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 20#.

MEDIUM WORK: Lifting up to 50#; frequent lifting or carrying objects weighing up to 25#.

LIGHT-HEAVY WORK: Lifting up to 80#; frequent lifting or carrying objects weighing up to 45#.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

This is a full-time non-exempt position. Specific schedules will be determined based on the weather and general needs of the business.

Summary
JOB SUMMARY

The primary responsibility of the Lead Horticulturist is to grow, maintain, and take care of all types of plants and landscapes in a variety of settings while leading a team of horticulture specialists. The Lead will ensure time cards are completed correctly and assign the horticulture team duties. A horticulture specialist can expect to assist in other business areas, such as fertilization, irrigation, and tree health. Provide excellent customer service by assisting customers promptly and courteously. Answer questions and provide information as needed. Perform all job responsibilities in a safe, timely, and efficient manner.
