Job summary

The Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission is seeking a Senior Horticultural Support Technician in Prince George’s County. The role involves leading a landscaping crew, plant selection, and maintaining park grounds and facilities.

You will assist with garden projects, identify plants, apply IPM practices, and train staff. Winter snow removal and potential CDL/endosement requirements are part of the duties. Equal opportunity employer.

Qualifications

• Associate’s Degree in Horticulture, Arboriculture, Forestry or related area.
• Two years gardening, greenhouse, nursery experience or horticulture support work.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience totaling four years.
• Valid driver's license with no encumbrances; CDL may be required within 12 months of hire.
• Some positions may require CDL with endorsements within 12 months of placement; pesticide applicator registration within 12 months.
• Pass Commission medical examination.

Responsibilities

• Direct an area landscaping crew and manage landscape bed preparation, annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees.
• Direct crews in bed maintenance: weeding, fertilizing, watering, raking and mulching.
• Prune, plant and transplant trees; mentor less experienced staff.
• Mow fine turf and, when needed, relay sod.
• Assist in diagnosing plant issues, drainage problems and pests; apply pesticides/fertilizers under supervision.
• Operate mowers, small equipment, and vehicles; CDL may be required for some assignments.
• Assist with designing and installing hardscape structures such as walls, steps, paths, fountains.
• Operate snow throwers and shovels for snow removal.
• Record and maintain pesticide/fertilizer usage.
