Job summary

State of North Carolina’s Department of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Worker IV (S) in the Cumberland County Maintenance Unit. The role drives equipment operations across multiple crews and oversees safety, training, and performance on major road projects.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED with at least six years of relevant experience and hold a valid North Carolina CDL or obtain one within 360 days of hire.

Qualifications

• High school or GED and 6 years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization.
• Equivalency options may apply per the Education and Experience Equivalency Guide.
• Possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License or obtaining one within 360 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Operate equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader and other gear.
• Lead a highway maintenance crew; supervise and train others in equipment operations.
• Install traffic control and erosion control devices; perform road maintenance and repairs.
• Work in varied weather; may be required to respond to emergencies or night work.
• Comply with safety policies and CDL requirements; maintain records and complete basic computer and iPad tasks.
