California State University Long Beach invites applications for a Lead Groundsworker (2 positions) in Southern California, Long Beach campus. Under supervision, you will assist, supervise and coordinate grounds workers, gardeners and related staff, ensuring proper maintenance and landscaping across the campus.

This temporary, full-time position offers benefits and requires knowledge of horticulture, ability to schedule and train staff, and a valid California driver's license.

Qualifications

• Equivalent to a high school diploma and two years of experience in planting, cultivating, and maintaining flowers and shrubs, or in general grounds maintenance work.

Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Grounds and Landscape Services or his designee, assist, supervise and coordinate the activities of Grounds workers, Gardeners, GardeningSpecialists and other technicians/specialists engaged in generalgrounds maintenance.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan, schedule, assign and supervise routine maintenancefunction. Has through knowledge of tools, equipment related to thetrade. Basic computer skills, ability to send and read email,operate programs as trained. Must be able to occasionally workflexible schedules to meet organizational goals Ability to providetraining, interpret policies and explain methods and procedures.Have good horticulture knowledge of identification of plants andmaintenance methods.
• Maintains, Installs and develops new planting sites orrestoration of existing landscaping. Work in support of campusevents and activities. Schedules irrigation controllers in thefield and through the Rain master central irrigation system, workswith outside contractors/vendors in coordinating work, inspectingwork completed to the satisfaction of University standards.

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, andqualifications the candidate brings to the position, internalequity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification SalaryRange for this position is $3,890 (Step #1) - $5,555 (Step #19) permonth.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools andequipment used in planting, cultivating and caring for flowers,shrubs, lawns and trees. General knowledge of common plantdiseases, pests, and weeds and approved methods and materials usedin their control and eradication. Horticultural methods andmaterials and planting and growing requirements of plants commonlygrown in California. Extensive knowledge of plants; Advanceknowledge of irrigation programming, scheduling, design andinstallation. Ability to draft, coordinate and supervise the workof others. Ability to provide training, interpret policies andexplain methods and procedures. Inspect and evaluate the work ofothers. Ability to read and write at a level sufficient forsatisfactory job performance.

Ability to perform general gardening and grounds maintenance work.Supervision experience in an institutional setting. Knowledge andability to read blueprints and inspect quality of work. Basiccomputer skills, ability to send and read email, operate otherprograms as trained. Must be able to read, write, and speak at alevel appropriate to the position. Must be able to occasionallywork a flexible schedule to meet organizational needs. Experienceworking in a university or large service organizational setting.Maintains a safe work environment.
