Job summary

Houston Zoo is seeking a Supervisor of Grounds & Housekeeping to lead both groundskeeping and housekeeping teams, ensuring cleanliness, safety, and aesthetic appeal across indoor facilities and outdoor areas. You will manage staff schedules, inspect work, and coordinate maintenance with other departments while promoting world-class service for Zoo guests.

The role requires leadership experience, strong communication skills, and the ability to train staff on equipment and safety procedures.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required or equivalent experience.
• Minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible work experience, including at least two (2) years in a leadership or management role.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Maintain a valid Texas driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Supervises, coordinates, and monitors work schedules/assignments of grounds and housekeeping crews.
• Supervises daily grounds maintenance and housekeeping activities to ensure cleanliness and safety.
• Assists with preparing and submitting required reports.
• Develops daily work schedules and assigns tasks based on priorities.
• Monitors staff performance and ensures work meets quality standards.
• Inspects facilities and grounds to identify issues and ensure upkeep.
• Ensures compliance with safety, sanitation, and environmental regulations.
• Inspects quality of work and prepares related reports.
• Trains staff on equipment usage specific to the department.
• Operates equipment per OSHA regulations (mowing, weed trimmers, lifts, backhoe, tractor, etc.).
• Responsible for recruitment, selection, development, evaluation, and performance management of direct reports.
• Handles employee relations and communication with management.
• Communicates with other departments on work plans.
• Ensures world-class service is delivered to Zoo guests.
• Establishes work standards and procedures and evaluates results.
• Investigates and responds to staff and guest complaints.
• Orders supplies, parts, chemicals, and other materials.
• Maintains records and reports to monitor work activities.
• Ensures all employees are in proper Zoo uniform with name tags.
• Collaborates with Special Events staff to ensure event success.
• Ensures staff receive proper Spartan chemical training.
• Ensures proper use of equipment and PPE.
• Contributes to wildlife conservation through waste and energy reduction and guest engagement.
