Job summary

The Washington Post is seeking an ambitious Graphics Assignment Editor to join our Washington, D.C. newsroom. You will lead graphics-led storytelling, shaping projects and driving high-impact work for a broad audience.

You will oversee both breaking news and enterprise graphics while collaborating across disciplines. We value editorial instinct, strong visual storytelling, and the ability to mentor reporters and graphics staff.

Qualifications

  • 5–8 years of editing experience in visual journalism, graphics, data reporting, or related field.
  • Strong news judgment and ability to identify stories where graphics advance a story.
  • Thoughtful feedback in editing process.
  • Strong portfolio of maps, information graphics, and visual stories for digital audiences.
  • Balance speed and ambition, contributing to breaking news while meeting deadlines on enterprise work.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration in a newsroom environment.
  • Commitment to accuracy, clarity, accessibility and journalistic rigor.

Responsibilities

  • Pitch, assign and edit visual-first stories in coordination with newsroom priorities across breaking news, politics, policy, business and more.
  • Edit stories for clarity, accuracy, storytelling impact and visual refinement.
  • Contribute to breaking news coverage with fast, accurate graphics that explain a unique visual angle.
  • Mentor and support visual journalists through editing, feedback and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Help strengthen team processes and support a collaborative team culture.
