Job description

About CVM Electric

CVM Electric is a fourth-generation, family-owned commercial and industrial electrical contractor that has been rooted in Western New York since 1919. We’re launching a new Generator Division and building teams across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. This role will help shape that team from the ground up.

The Role

The Lead Generator Technician is a hands-on field role for an experienced generator tech who is ready to lead. The position combines preventive maintenance, diagnostics and repair on diesel and natural gas standby and prime power systems with coordinating, training and supporting a small team of field technicians. The Lead is the team’s go-to person for technical problems and safety on the job, and reports to the Director of Service Operations.

Experienced generator technicians who aren’t yet at the lead level are encouraged to apply. Candidates will also be considered for Generator Field Service Technician openings ($35.00 – $45.00 per hour).

What You’ll Do
  • Perform preventive maintenance, load bank testing, diagnostics and repair on standby and prime power generator systems
  • Troubleshoot generator controls, automatic transfer switches (ATS) and related electrical equipment
  • Install, commission and start up new generator systems
  • Coordinate technicians on job sites, including larger installs, startups and emergency calls
  • Train and mentor technicians on diagnostics, repair procedures and safe work practices
  • Check completed work and review service reports for accuracy
  • Lead job site safety briefings
  • Take part in candidate interviews
  • Respond to emergency service calls as part of an after-hours and on-call rotation
What We’re Looking For
  • 5+ years of hands-on generator maintenance and repair experience, including at least 1 year as a lead or senior technician
  • Strong diesel and natural gas engine knowledge, and AC/DC electrical troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to read schematics, wiring diagrams and technical manuals
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean 5-year driving record
  • Ability to operate a 3500-series truck while towing a trailer
  • Ability to pass a background check and a DOT physical
  • Own basic hand tools (CVM provides specialty and diagnostic tools)
  • Availability for regular travel within an assigned territory, including overnight travel
  • Preferred: manufacturer certifications (Cummins, Caterpillar, Kohler, Generac, MTU), a Journeyman Electrician license, and a CDL Class A or B
