Job summary

City of Apache Junction seeks a part-time Range Safety Officer to oversee the police firearms range, train officers, and manage rang e operations. Responsibilities include safety enforcement, curriculum development, and recordkeeping.

The role requires AZPOST firearms instructor certification, four years of law enforcement experience with two years in training, and armorer certifications or the ability to obtain them within 12 months of hire. Location is Apache Junction, AZ.

Qualifications

• HS diploma or GED and 4 years paid full-time law enforcement experience, including 2 years as firearms instructor or range instructor.
• AZPOST-recognized firearms instructor certification and AZPOST rifle instructor certification or equivalent.
• Armorer certifications for Glock, AR-15, Remington 870 shotgun, 40mm launcher and pepper ball platform, or obtain within 12 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Manage safe operation of the police firearms range and enforce range safety procedures.
• Plan and administer firearms training and qualification programs for sworn personnel.
• Serve as lead firearms instructor and subject-matter expert on safety, handling, and marksmanship.
• Coordinate and schedule training, maintain instructional consistency, and ensure certifications are current.
• Develop and maintain firearms training curriculum, lesson plans, and range procedures.
• Maintain training records, certifications, equipment issuance, and related documentation.
• Oversee inventory, maintenance, and accountability of firearms and range equipment.
• Evaluate proficiency and provide remedial training as needed.
• Assist with evaluation and selection of firearms and equipment; advise on safety and effectiveness.
• Monitor trends and update policies to promote officer safety and readiness.
