Job Description

Lead Firearms Instructors (LFIs) are the first point of contact for Federal Flight Deck Officers when they arrive at the training venue. They are responsible for checking them in, verifying weapons and credentials, conducting training, and overseeing the course of fire at the gun‑range. They ensure the safety of all personnel on the range and secure SSI and SPII information during and after requalification sessions.

Responsibilities

• Serve as on‑site training manager for the Federal Flight Deck Officer (FFDO) program.
• Conduct all classroom instruction, delivering the approved TSA training and safety brief.
• Introduce and describe new equipment and ensure all students understand and sign the safety briefing.
• Maintain an instructor‑to‑student ratio of 1:6 for each training session.
• Verify weapons and credentials of each FFDO through visual inspection upon arrival.
• Ensure proper scoring of targets and completion of applicable administrative forms.
• Sign and certify qualification scores for all FFDOs attempting to qualify.
• Take custody of unloaded weapons, transport devices, credentials, and other equipment for return to TSA/FAMS when an FFDO fails to qualify.
• Notify the FFDO Program Office to arrange return of equipment if no authorized FAMS representative is present.
• Secure SSI and SPII in compliance with TSA MD 2100.2, Privacy and Information Collection Policy, and TSA MD 1400.3.
• Oversee time‑keeping of all SFI labor hours.
• Participate in internal compliance training events.

Qualifications

• Current or former federal law enforcement agent, officer, or civilian employee who has completed a recognized federal firearms instructor training program accepted by TSA/FAMS (e.g., "FLETC FITP", "FAMS FITP", "FBI/DEA FITP", "U.S. Postal Inspectors FITP" or equivalent).
• Successfully completed a 2–3 day firearms re‑qualification training program under the technical direction of the SAC, FAMS Training Division, and the FFDO Program Office.
• 5 years of firearms training experience.
• Associate’s degree or equivalent combination of education, technical certifications, or training.
• Ability to work in indoor or outdoor gun‑range environments, handle weapons and ammunition, and comply with hearing protection requirements.
• Successful completion of a security application and background‑investigation clearance.
