Job summary

Swoon in Berthoud, CO is seeking an experienced Lead Fiber Install Technician to join our fiber infrastructure team. This field role focuses on underground placement, installing various fiber cables, and leading a crew of field technicians.

Expect a 4-day workweek with a start around 6:45 AM, outdoors in various conditions, and the opportunity to work on projects expanding high-speed connectivity throughout the region. The role offers a company vehicle, tools, PPE, and growth potential.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience with fiber optic cable installation and placement.
  • Hands-on experience with underground fiber construction.
  • Experience pulling and/or blowing fiber optic cable.
  • Experience operating fiber installation equipment such as compressors, tuggers, bull wheels, reel trailers, pulling equipment, or micro cable blowers.
  • Experience using rodders for troubleshooting.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and perform fiber optic cable installation and placement in the field.
  • Install traditional loose-tube, armored, micro and ribbon fiber cable.
  • Operate cable placement tools including hydraulic pulling and air-assisted blowing methods.
  • Set up cable placement operations and coordinate activities with other crew members.
  • Calculate cable footage and manage slack to prevent damage.
  • Troubleshoot placement issues and communicate solutions to the Foreman or Project Manager.
  • Train, support, and provide guidance to less-experienced technicians.

Job description

Schedule: 4-day workweek, approximately 6:45 AM–5:00 PM

Travel: Field work covering the area from Cheyenne, WY to Colorado Springs, including locations east of the Front Range.

Overtime: Occasional Fridays and overtime may be required based on workload, weather, or emergency outages

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Lead Fiber Install Technician to join our growing fiber infrastructure team in Berthoud, CO.

This is a hands‑on field position for someone with strong experience in fiber optic cable placement and installation, particularly underground construction. The ideal candidate is comfortable operating installation equipment, pulling and blowing fiber, troubleshooting placement issues, and providing leadership and guidance to other field technicians.

The right candidate will have a strong work ethic, attention to safety and quality, and the ability to work effectively in changing field conditions.

What You'll Do
  • Lead and perform fiber optic cable installation and placement in the field.

  • Proof and prepare pathways for cable installation.
  • Install multiple cables within conduit and work with occupied conduit when required.
  • Set up and bypass vaults during cable placement operations.
  • Install cable through innerduct and EMT.
  • Troubleshoot cable placement issues using rodding, compressors, pulling equipment, and other field tools.
  • Identify problems and communicate solutions to the Foreman or Project Manager.
  • Train, support, and provide guidance to less‑experienced technicians.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
  • Communicate professionally with customers, team members, Foremen, and Project Managers.
  • Follow project specifications, safety requirements, and installation procedures.
  • Perform other field duties as assigned.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
  • Previous experience with fiber optic cable installation and placement.
  • Hands‑on experience with underground fiber construction.
  • Experience pulling and/or blowing fiber optic cable.
  • Experience working with one or more of the following:
  • Traditional loose‑tube fiber
  • Armored fiber
  • Ribbon fiber
  • Experience operating fiber installation equipment such as compressors, tuggers, bull wheels, reel trailers, pulling equipment, or micro cable blowers.
  • Experience using rodders for troubleshooting.
  • Ability to drive trucks with trailers. CDL is not required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and field conditions.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to lead and guide other technicians in the field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous lead technician or crew leadership experience.
  • Experience with multiple fiber placement methods.
  • Experience troubleshooting difficult cable pulls or conduit conditions.
  • Experience working around existing/occupied conduit.
  • Aerial fiber installation experience, including bucket truck or pole work.
  • OTDR experience is a plus, but not required.

This is a field-based, hands‑on position. The successful candidate should be comfortable working outdoors, operating heavy installation equipment, driving trucks and trailers, and working in different job‑site conditions.

The typical start time is 6:45 AM, with a four-day workweek. Friday work is generally uncommon but may occasionally be required due to workload or emergency outages.
