TYPE OF SUPERVISION GIVEN TO OTHERS
Provides indirect guidance to the grounds staff, student workers, work-study students, and temporary employees. Serves as the lead worker within the Grounds Department.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of the Director of Facilities, the Lead Facilities Groundskeeper provides maintenance services for campus roads and grounds at East Campus and other College Locations, as needed.
This position performs snow and ice removal during the winter months; maintains the Ag Center waste-management operation; and assists and serves as backup to the Lead Maintenance Mechanic with maintenance duties, including responsibilities related to the Public Water Supply and wastewater systems.
DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Receives general direction from the Director of Facilities and completes assigned work with minimal or no direct supervision.
- Serves as lead worker for Grounds department, Organizes daily work, communicates assignments, and provides direction to the grounds staff in accordance with established written procedures and accepted operating practices.
- Repairs and maintains campus roadways, parking areas, and walkways, including concrete, asphalt and gravel, and related areas.
- Keeps College entrances and surrounding areas clean and free of debris and trash.
- Performs all types of grounds-maintenance work, including mowing, trimming, pruning, plant removal and transplanting. Apply disease-control treatment when required.
- Maintains required burn permits and coordinates, plans, and implements prescribed burns of prairie grass areas in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, permit requirements, weather conditions, notification requirements, and established safety procedures.
- Performs first level maintenance on equipment used for assigned work, including changing vehicle oil, and oiling, greasing, and lubricating operating components on mowers, tractors, trucks, vans and other power operated equipment. Replace components such as valves, pumps, spark plugs, brake shoes, as appropriate. Maintains operating and service records on all applicable equipment.
- Performs snow and ice removal and other outdoor assignments as required during the winter months, as required.
- Installs and repairs sod; seeds turf; applies fertilizer, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides; and performs other related duties as assigned.
- Performs general tree maintenance.
- Assists and serves as back up to the Lead Maintenance Mechanic with the responsibilities listed below:
- Public Water Supply; maintains required reports: collects and submits samples to the appropriate regulatory agency; records daily readings and maintains equipment associated with the Public Water Supply; monitors and adjusts chlorine settings; and helps ensure compliance with applicable requirements.
- Maintains readings and records used to prepare the water bill for Prairie Point Apartments.
- Performs routine and scheduled preventative maintenance on systems and equipment , including HVAC equipment, pumps, fans, compressors, motors, lighting, plumbing, and furniture.
- Performs miscellaneous interior and exterior building-maintenance as directed.
- Maintains, safeguards, and keeps a neat and orderly tool, stockroom, and work area.
- Assists with the day-to-day operation of the waste water treatment plant.
- Keeps Director of Facilities informed of potential issues, unusual observations or occurances, irregularities, and departmental work status, and other matters requiring attention.
- Complies with all applicable federal, state, local, College, and departmental safety requirements.
- Attends required trainings.
- Maintains satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record.
- Obtains and maintains all job-related licenses and certifications.
DESCRIPTION OF OTHER DUTIES
- Coordinates and schedules repairs on grounds equipment.
- Moves materials, equipment, furniture, and other items assigned, using safe work practices.
- Understands the operation of the BAS (Building Automation System)
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

- Works cooperatively with outside agencies, contracts, and vendors.
- Works directly with the Lead Maintenance Mechanic (EC) to support safe, successful, and continuous operations.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
(To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.)
- High school diploma or recognized equivalent required. Two years of college course work in a related field preferred.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds on an occasional basis required.
- Ability to work overtime as requested required.
- Ability to successfully serve as a lead worker required. Previous experience preferred.
- Mechanical, Maintenance, Welding, Groundskeeper, Horticulture, and Agriculture, and/or related field background or experience preferred. Trade experience is acceptable.
- Ability to follow instructions with minimum supervision required.
- Must be able to read and understand operation manuals relating to equipment used in department and then service or repair equipment.
- Ability to communicate successfully with faculty, staff, students and the public required.
- Must be alert at all times and able to react calmly in an emergency.
The following are required qualifications to be obtained and maintained after hire:
- Must obtain and maintain the pesticide applicator or operator credential required by the Illinois department of agriculture for assigned turf-pesticides duties within six months of hire.
