Job summary

The North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) seeks an Exhibit Designer to lead in-house exhibit design, production, and digital engagement efforts across 27 state historic sites. You will supervise staff, coordinate with external partners, and ensure historical accuracy and ADA compliance.

Located in Raleigh, the role includes hybrid telework eligibility under the department's policy and requires strong graphic and exhibit design skills with a focus on interpretive

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Biology, Botany, Conservation, Education, History or Zoology, and four years of museum or related work, or an equivalent combination.
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in exhibit design, including planning, concept development, and production coordination.
  • Advanced proficiency in graphic design and visual branding, including layout for print publications and adherence to institutional graphic standards.
  • Experience with digital engagement tools such as interactive media, CMS, or web-based interpretive platforms.
  • Knowledge of construction standards and building-code coordination with architects, electrical installers, and fabrication contractors.

Responsibilities

  • Lead in-house exhibit design and production, including concepts, floor plans and panel layouts, fabrication and installation for gallery, wayside, and directional exhibits.
  • Produce promotional graphics and two-dimensional materials for site promotion and publications.
  • Guide planning and evaluation, chair planning teams, ensure ADA compliance, and conduct visitor evaluations to improve exhibit effectiveness.
  • Manage project workflows and external partnerships, coordinate with designers and fabricators, review contract designs, supervise installation, and consult with architects.
  • Supervise design staff and contribute to policy development within the Design Branch.
