Smart Tech Contracting, LLC is seeking a Lead EPMS Field Technician in the IAD region to lead EPMS/BAS installations, commissioning and closeout at mission-critical data centers. You will direct subcontractors, coordinate field activities, and ensure timely delivery of projects with a focus on EPMS delivery.

Candidates should be proficient with power monitoring, Modbus, gateway configuration, and BAS initiation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction or related discipline.
  • Two years hands-on EPMS or controls installation, testing, validation and troubleshooting.
  • Minimum of five years of additional EPMS/controls experience, of which at least two years must be EPMS or power monitoring specific.
  • Preferred: Prior EPMS system integration experience on data center projects.
  • Willingness to travel within Northern Virginia/DC area and regionally as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Lead installation teams in daily and weekly meetings and coordinate subcontractors.
  • Configure EPMS field devices including meters, gateways and remote I/O.
  • Troubleshoot EPMS and BAS systems and diagnose Modbus communication faults.
  • Perform QA/QC of EPMS, BAS and integrated systems and closeout duties.
  • Provide input on estimating and takeoffs for proposals.
  • Communicate project progress to clients and stakeholders.
  • Ensure safety and compliance on site.

Job Summary

The Lead EPMS Field Technician will be well versed in electrical power monitoring (EPMS) and building automation systems, work with and direct sub-contractors and inform both internal and external clients on project progress. Provides technical support and leadership to plan, schedule and execute project start up, installation and testing, commissioning and closeout of EPMS and building automation systems integration projects in mission critical / data center, industrial and commercial sectors.

This role is weighted toward EPMS delivery. The successful candidate will be proficient in power monitoring system installation, metering and gateway configuration, Modbus troubleshooting and point-to-point testing, while remaining fully capable across BAS / HVAC controls installation and startup. The Lead will work with design engineers, construction contractors, switchgear and equipment vendors, commissioning agents and client staff to ensure proper operation and acceptance of the monitoring, automation and software solutions.

The Lead EPMS Field Technician will receive limited direction on day-to-day work and general instruction on new projects or assignments. Will assist project leadership on automation projects of complex scope. Will work independently or under limited supervision.

This person will communicate and operate in line with organizational goals and values, as well as departmental objectives.

Essential Functions
Installation and Installation Coordination of EPMS / BAS Controls Systems (35%)
  • Direct and monitor subcontractors (onsite and offsite) including scheduling, resource management and coordination of construction and start-up services as needed. Construction trades generally include various electrical, mechanical and equipment suppliers.
  • Ability to troubleshoot EPMS panels, network racks, meters, gateways, remote I/O and BAS controllers and field devices
  • Install and terminate low voltage, network and communication cabling, including CAT6 to structured cabling standards.
  • Install and terminate serial (RS-485 / Modbus) field wiring, including shielding, grounding and end-of-line termination practices
  • Install and remove temporary network and test infrastructure supporting phased site turnover and cutover
  • Execute labeling of panels, racks, devices, fiber and terminations to client and project standards
  • Must be able to organize a job site including material logistics / inventory, tools storage and security
  • Provide technical information and safety guidance for activities on site
  • Lead installation teams on daily and weekly meetings
  • Support the development and execution of additional services through change orders
  • Provide input to project team on developing RFIs
  • Identify document conflicts, scope gaps and differing site conditions, and provide the detail needed for timely written notice to the client
Startup, Commissioning and Closeout of EPMS / BAS Controls Systems (40%)
  • Configure EPMS field devices including power quality meters, gateways, remote I/O modules and sequence event recorders — communication parameters, addressing, point naming and device settings
  • Execute troubleshooting of EPMS and BAS systems including corrective actions
  • Diagnose and resolve Modbus TCP and Modbus RTU / RS-485 communication faults, including addressing, baud rate, parity, framing, termination, register mapping, scaling and byte order
  • Modify device templates and device lists to correct communication faults, working under client direction
  • Determine whether integration faults originate in our installation and configuration or in equipment furnished by others, document the finding with supporting evidence, and elevate third‑party defects promptly
  • Execute and document point-to-point testing and vendor checkout reporting to the approved project format
  • Participate in commissioning efforts with external stakeholders
  • Analyze system operation, work with project team to demonstrate system operation and verify consistency with the contracted scope of work
  • Perform QA / QC of EPMS, BAS and integrated systems using system software and diagnostic tools
  • Provide installation inspections and other closeout duties to ensure customer acceptance
  • Provide markups for shop drawings to document asbuilt conditions
  • Execute client asset inventory and supply chain compliance requirements, including asset label installation, serial number collection and periodic asset list validation
Reporting and Communication (15%)
  • Project communication and reporting including daily site updates, daily site safety reporting and progress reports
  • Document and track issues and out of scope efforts
  • Communicate regularly with subcontractors, project managers, clients and commissioning agents on project progress
Engineering Support and Business Development (10%)
  • Provide input to project teams on estimating and takeoffs for proposals
  • Attend EPMS and BAS audits and complete related reports and communication
Position Requirements (intermediate Level For All The Following)
  • Proficient knowledge of electrical power distribution equipment and power monitoring systems, including metering, gateways, remote I/O, sequence event recorders, switchgear, switchboards, UPS, PDUs and busway
  • Proficient knowledge of Modbus TCP and Modbus RTU / RS-485 communication, including hands‑on fault isolation
  • Proficient knowledge of network fundamentals, including IP addressing, switch and router port assignment, structured cabling standards and fiber optic handling, termination and testing
  • Working knowledge of HVAC, mechanical and electrical systems and materials
  • Knowledge of controls and instrumentation wiring, relay logic, current transformers and potential transformers, and associated materials
  • Skilled at using MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams), along with exceptional organizational skills for file management
  • Skilled in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail
  • Ability to work successfully in a remote environment through effective communication and organizational skills, self‑motivation, proactiveness and resourcefulness in a distraction free workspace
  • Ability to interpret AE construction drawings, electrical one‑line diagrams, EPMS and BAS shop drawings, network architecture diagrams, manufacturers wiring diagrams, register maps, standards documentation, submittals and product data sheets
  • Ability to follow company and site safety requirements
  • Ability to analyze and prepare documents, reports and correspondence
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form (technical and non‑technical information)
  • Ability to communicate effectively directly with clients and at times serve as primary point of client contact
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet close deadlines
  • Ability to effectively plan and delegate the work of others
  • Ability to achieve certification for NFPA70E and / or OSHA training as required
  • Ability to work safely in and around energized electrical equipment, following established safe work procedures and wearing appropriate arc flash PPE
  • Ability to obtain and maintain client site access, including background screening, and to comply with confidentiality and document handling requirements
  • Ability to maintain jobsite and keep it organized
  • Organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously

TRAVEL / RELOCATION REQUIREMENTS
  • This position requires daily travel within the Northern Virginia / Washington D.C. area
  • Opportunities to travel regionally up to 50%, if necessary, this may include travel to any or all 50 US states
  • Initial travel across 50 states
  • Travel is defined as physically leaving home on behalf of business activities including but not limited to client sites, meetings with other employees, meeting for business development purposes, running errands on behalf of the business, attending industry conferences, etc.
  • Must relocate to or live in the Virginia / Washington D.C. area
Education / Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction or related discipline

OR

Two years of experience with hands‑on installation, testing, validation and troubleshooting of EPMS or controls infrastructure

PLUS

Minimum of five years of additional experience with installation, hands‑on testing, validation and troubleshooting of EPMS or controls infrastructure, of which at least two years must be EPMS or power monitoring specific

PREFERRED: Prior experience as an EPMS system integrator on data center construction projects, including commissioning support alongside third‑party commissioning agents
