Job summary

Eversource is hiring a Lead Engineer for the Distribution Engineering Team in Dorchester, MA. You will supervise engineers, coordinate design and maintenance of distribution systems, and drive life cycle planning to ensure safe, reliable electric service.

This role requires 8–10 years of engineering experience in the electric utility sector and a bachelor's degree in engineering. Hybrid work arrangements and statewide travel may be required to support operations and storm response.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering required.
  • 8–10 years in technical/engineering aspects of electrical utility industry; supervisory experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of utility power systems preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, coach, and develop engineers; approve time and review work for quality.
  • Oversee distribution systems within the assigned local territory (Overhead Radial, Underground Radial, Underground Network).
  • Develop, justify, and approve Life Cycle Plan activities over multi-year horizon; support operation during emergencies.
  • Design, modify, and replace transmission and distribution systems; prepare permits and customer notifications.
  • Provide technical guidance to operating areas during normal and emergency situations; perform root-cause analyses.

Distribution Engineering is responsible for the strategic development, expansion, planning, design, maintenance and operation of the system and its equipment to provide reliable service to customers. Technical solutions and modernization initiatives are improving operations and enabling integration of renewable energy resources. The group also works to prevent, evaluate and provide appropriate resolutions to system failures.The Lead Engineer is responsible for the development, expansion, planning, design, maintenance and operation of the system and its equipment to meet the mission and objectives of the organization. In addition, this position coordinates the evaluation of system failures, and the appropriate resolutions, in order to provide support to operations on unplanned maintenance.Responsible for ensuring that the Eversource distribution systems are designed to high quality standards that provide customers with safe, reliable, competitively priced and environmentally sound electric service.This position shares accountability with peers in the strategy, development, and design of the organization’s Life Cycle Plan, a comprehensive long-term plan for the transmission/distribution system. Responsible for supervising, assigning, prioritizing and directing the work performed by other Engineers and staff.The roles are based in Dorchester, MAEssential Functions:Supervises, coaches, and develops engineers; approves time and reviews work for quality. Assigns, prioritizes and directs work performed by at least 2 FTE Engineers or 1 FTE Engineer and 1 FTE Designer.Responsible for overseeing all types of distribution systems within the local territory the lead is assigned to. This can include Overhead Radial, Underground Radial, and Underground Network distribution systems.Responsible for the cost and performance of certain assets on the system which may include reliability analysis and trending of system events and monitoring of equipment condition.Responsible for the development, justification and approval of the Life Cycle Plan activities over a multi-year horizon and for ongoing projectsEnsures that the design and specification of additions, modifications and replacements to the transmission and distribution systems, and the preparation of system electrical permits and related customer notifications, are completed accurately and on time.Responsible for the development of preliminary engineering designs and the details, as necessary.Collaborates with other Engineers within Engineering to ensure consistency and teamwork.Provides technical support and direction to operating areas relative to system priorities, engineering guidelines and operating decisions during normal and emergency situations.Accountable for root-cause analysis, development and implementation of corrective actions.Responsible for the evaluation and selection of technology and equipment for the system.Responsible for the development of standards and procedures for design, operation and maintenance.Assumes the role of the Manager as required.Expected to assist with storm duty and any other major events.Technical Knowledge/Skill/Education/Licenses/Certifications:Knowledge of utility power systems is preferred.Ability to independently develop, present and execute new projects through collaborations with other departments.Familiarity with power-related software is preferred.Education:Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required.Experience:Minimum of eight (8) to ten (10) years in the technical, operational, or engineering aspects of the electrical utility industry. Supervisory experience preferred.Licenses & Certifications:NoneWorking Conditions:Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.Depending on the specific nature of the engineering role, position may require occasional to significant travel by car. A valid driver’s license is required.HYBRID SCHEDULE: Eversource supports work-life balance by offering hybrid schedules for certain roles. Eligibility is based on job responsibilities, operational needs, nature of work and team dynamics. Current guidelines require employees to work at least three days in the office, including Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with the third day set by the employee and supervisor based on department needs. These guidelines apply to roles approved for remote work and are subject to change, based on managerial discretion and work performance.
