Job summary

Qualus is seeking a Lead Civil Structural Engineer to design mat and pier foundations for substations and structure supports for equipment and towers. You will apply codes and client standards, prepare drawings, and coordinate with other disciplines.

Responsibilities include QA/QC, client meetings, mentoring staff, and developing concept designs for new projects in a dynamic power infrastructure environment. A PE license and ABET degree are required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Masters in Civil Engineering from ABET accredited institution.
  • 6+ years of civil structural engineering calculations experience.
  • Proficient with AutoCAD and MicroStation; PE license preferred or required.
  • Experience in transmission, distribution and generating stations is a plus.

  • Develop conceptual design plans for new projects in early development phases.
  • Design foundations and steel structures for substations and equipment supports.
  • Perform QA/QC processes and coordinate with other engineering disciplines.
  • Lead client meetings and site visits to collect and deliver design data.

Job description

Position Overview

Power your future with Qualus in our Engineering department as a Lead Civil Structural Engineer. In this role, the candidate will design and detail mat and pier type foundations for substation structures. Additionally, the candidate will design substation structures ranging from simple equipment supports to overhead line towers. All work will be performed with emphasis on quality and project costs following client’s requirements and internal company’s quality control and quality assurance practices.

The candidate may also complete substation designs, as necessary. Work will include applying applicable codes and client standards to design general arrangements, equipment and electrical layouts, elevation views, grading and fence plans, foundation plan and details, substation rigid bus arrangements, structure details, and bills of material.

This position may be based in Lake Mary, FL; Palm Beach Gardens, FL; Las Vegas, NV, Boise, ID; Raleigh, NC; or Fort Worth, TX.

Responsibilities
  • Develop overall conceptual design plans in the initial development phase of new projects.
  • Work with renewable energy developers and other clients with support specific to schedules and cost estimates.
  • Design foundations using commercially available software such as LPILE.
  • Develop steel structure models for rigid bus and equipment supports.
  • Perform company’s Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) processes.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with our external business partners; Present information and respond to questions from individual or groups of clients.
  • Direct and/or participate in client meetings/job site visits to collect or deliver design and engineering data.
  • Mentor less experienced staff on a wide range of technical and project management skills.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelors of Science or Masters in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited institution.
  • 6+ years of experience performing civil structural engineering calculations.
  • Proficient with drafting programs such as AutoCAD and MicroStation a plus.
  • Active Professional Engineering (PE) license
  • Experience in transmission, distribution and generating stations is a plus.
  • Must have strong analytical and computer skills. Must be able to identify necessary software to complete needed design work.
