Job summary

Pickett, an ESP Associates company, is seeking a Lead Engineer to support our Civil Department in land development and civil engineering for electrical substations and transmission line ROW. You will help grow our Civil team across regional offices.

Responsibilities include oversight of substation civil design, permitting, site layout, grading, stormwater, and coordination with clients and stakeholders. A PE and 10+ years of experience are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s in Engineering is required.
• PE certification is required.
• 10+ years of related engineering experience, whether through consulting or working for an electric utility, is required.
• Experience in civil design for substations and transmission projects is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Oversee electrical substation civil design including permitting support, site layout, grading design, retaining wall design, stormwater analysis, containment structure design, survey coordination, and civil construction support.
• Review civil construction specifications, cost estimates, engineering proposals, and project schedules.
• Provide support for transmission line ROW access improvement design including culvert sizing, stormwater drainage analysis, stabilization specification, construction support, and inspection.
• Assist with analyzing the design for civil elements related to high-voltage power transmission and substation design.
• Collaborate with clients, vendors, permitting agencies, and team members to see projects through to completion.

About The Role:

As a Lead Engineer, you will primarily support our Civil Department with land development and civil engineering practices for electrical substations and transmission line right-of-way. This role will also play a pivotal part in developing and growing our Civil Department in other regional offices.

What You Will Be Doing:

Oversight of electrical substation civil design including permitting support, site layout, grading design, retaining wall design, stormwater analysis, containment structure design, survey coordination, and civil construction support

Review civil construction specifications, cost estimates, engineering proposals, and project schedules

Provide support for transmission line right-of-way access improvement design including culvert sizing, stormwater drainage analysis, stabilization specification, construction support, and inspection

Assist with analyzing the design for various civil elements related to high-voltage power transmission and substation design

Partner with clients, vendors, permitting agencies, and various other team members and stakeholders to see projects through to completion

What You Bring:

Bachelor’s in Engineering (required)

Professional Engineer (PE) certification(required)

10+ years of related engineering experience, whether through consulting or working for an electric utility (required)

Extensive knowledge of the fundamentals of managing project scopes, schedules, and budgets

Experience in civil design work experience related to: 69kV/115kV/138kV/230kV/345kV/500kV electrical substations and/or electrical switchyards including: site grading, drainage analysis, detention basin design, structural foundation, retaining wall design, geotechnical analysis, pavement design, SPCC design, SW3P design, wetland access roads, and security fencing (highly preferred)

Technical knowledge of design codes and software (Civil 3D, AutoCAD, MicroStation, and stormwater analysis programs)

Understanding of basic practices for evaluating engineering and design issues

Mindset for developing better alternatives and recommendations related to the civil group (i.e.: structure, processes, software, etc.) with the ability to communicate and apply them accordingly

Ability to work in a safe manner and always obey safety regulations

Effective communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation)

Exposure to transmission, substation, environmental, right-of-way, construction, and maintenance stakeholders

Ability to use a collaborative approach when working with peers or clients

Demonstrate a high level of comfort with sharing knowledge freely

Ability to identify relevant metrics and ability to apply them to the business, our clients, and projects

Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a team environment &/or independently

Ability to think creatively as it relates to engineering innovation and solutions

Capacity to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and highly agile environment

Candidate must be able to pass a drug screen, background check, and have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the company’s driving (MVR) policy
