Qualifications

Responsibilities

Job Overview

Safety Management Services, a Jensen Hughes Company, invites applications for a Senior Engineer in our Risk Management division, a Mid-Senior engineering role for professionals specializing in energetic materials and explosives. With your extensive experience, you will spearhead high-stakes projects, provide expert guidance, and drive strategic improvements in risk mitigation. This position is pivotal in delivering comprehensive safety solutions to clients in defense, mining, and industrial sectors, fostering a legacy of excellence in hazard prevention.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead comprehensive Process Hazards Analysis (PHA) for high-risk operations, prioritizing based on material type and quantity, applying qualitative (e.g., JSA, HAZOP, FMEA) and quantitative methodologies (e.g., probability risk assessment, event probabilities), and integrating consequence analysis for thermal, fragment, and overpressure effects.
• Oversee regulatory compliance audits and programs, ensuring full adherence to PSM, ATF, DoD, EPA (RCRA, NESHAP), and other standards, while developing tailored practices for clients.
• Direct D3 operational support, assessing technologies for decontamination, disassembly, and demolition (e.g., remote cutting, thermal treatment, boroscope inspection), and advising on reuse, recycle, or disposal strategies.
• Guide facility siting and design projects, navigating civilian and military regulations, and collaborating with agencies to achieve compliance and optimal safety.
• Spearhead incident investigations, leading root cause analysis, event reconstruction, and scenario development to prevent recurrences in explosives industries.
• Establish and refine explosive safety standards across categories like processing, tooling and equipment, facility design, incident investigation, training, and procedures.
• Conduct advanced offsite consequence analysis, performing dispersion calculations and assisting with government agency interactions for regulated chemical facilities.
• Provide expertise in ancillary areas such as combustible dust mitigation (site surveys, testing, DHA), arc flash analysis (NEC, NFPA 660, IEEE compliance), chemical facility security (drafting SVA/SSP per DHS), risk-based mechanical integrity programs (OSHA-compliant), and ergonomic hazard solutions.
• Mentor mid- and junior-level staff, contribute to business development, and represent SMS in industry forums, emphasizing engineering principles for risk minimization.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering/ Mechanical Engineering, Explosives Engineering, or equivalent; PhD a plus.
• 7+ years of progressive experience in explosives risk management, with proven leadership in PHA teams and regulatory environments.
• Deep expertise in standards (e.g., NFPA 495, NFPA 660) and tools like PHA-Pro or PHA Works.
• Demonstrated success in incident investigation and facility design projects involving energetic materials.
• Exceptional leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills; ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
• Extensive experience in proprietary or high-security settings.
• Great interpersonal skills
• Strong technical writing and oral presentation skills
• Willingness to travel domestically and internationally for client engagements.

National Pay Range

$130,000 - $150,000 USD
