Job description

Join to apply for the Lead Electrical Engineer 1 - Grid role at Sargent & Lundy.

This position offers an opportunity to utilize your expertise in protective relaying and controls systems for HV and EHV substations. As a Project Lead, you will oversee engineering and design teams working on substation modifications and upgrades, including calculations, design documentation, and specifications.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Preparing relaying philosophies, selecting relay, control, and communication equipment, and developing SCADA and telecommunication configurations.
  2. Leading protection and controls engineering design efforts, guiding junior and senior engineers, and coordinating detailed design phases.
  3. Investigating, troubleshooting, and resolving engineering issues.
  4. Analyzing and designing single line diagrams, relaying & metering diagrams, and DC schematic diagrams.
  5. Preparing engineering studies for review and performing independent reviews of work by others.
  6. Coordinating with engineers, project managers, clients, and suppliers to ensure complete and timely designs.
  7. Reviewing existing facilities for upgrades and presenting findings to clients and peers.
  8. Sharing knowledge within Sargent & Lundy's systems of peer learning and mentoring less experienced engineers.
  9. Traveling to client and vendor sites for reviews, construction coordination, and field verification, as needed.

This role supports a hybrid work model, with three days in-office and two days remote weekly. Relocation assistance is available depending on your location.

Qualifications:
  • BS degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
  • 10+ years of experience in high voltage substations, including design, installation, and coordination.
  • Experience as a firm or client liaison in a support or lead engineering role.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications.
  • Excellent communication skills.
Preferred but not required:
  • Experience with relay calculations documentation.
  • PE license.
  • Knowledge of design tools and standards such as NEC, NESC, IEEE, ANSI.
  • Experience with protective relay equipment and SCADA systems.
  • AutoCAD or MicroStation skills.
  • Construction, start-up, testing, or commissioning experience.
