Job description

WSP’s Federal Power and Energy Team is searching for a Lead Electrical Engineer to provide electrical engineering support and technical expertise on power distribution and building electrical projects. Candidates may be based in Boise, ID; Honolulu, HI; Virginia Beach, VA; or Huntsville, AL; other locations may be considered.

Responsibilities
  • Review, comment and offer advice on third‑party design documents, procurement lists, and project plans.
  • Perform professional and complex electrical engineering work and technical reviews including development of single lines, three lines, wiring diagrams, general arrangements, equipment layouts, bus arrangements, grounding grid designs, lightning protection risk analysis and system design, and support construction and operating permit applications.
  • Verify site characteristics and provide technical input on engineering, design, testing, maintenance modifications, and construction procedures and issues.
  • Develop electrical calculations covering load analysis, short‑circuit analysis, protective device time‑current coordination, arc flash analysis, voltage drop, motor starting, lighting calculations, underground structure design, cable pulling tension, equipment sizing, grounding potentials, protective relaying coordination, and device settings.
  • Develop contract documents such as electrical plans, specifications, construction phasing and sequencing plans, and update electrical infrastructure layout plans with coordination of owners, other disciplines, sub‑consultants, and clients.
  • Work individually or as part of a cross‑functional team to execute project work on multiple concurrent projects; assist with installation layouts, cost and quantity calculations, and ensure compliance with owner requirements, specifications, permit applications, regulatory analysis and technical memos.
  • Provide guidance and training to entry‑ and mid‑level engineers.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations that explain research, findings, and recommendations to improve, prevent, control, restore, or address design and/or construction issues or opportunities.
  • Assist in analyzing field investigation data, offering input and action plans for moderate‑ to high‑level risk mitigation activities.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of relevant electrical engineering experience in the design and specification of low and medium voltage power distribution systems, building electrical systems, lighting systems, grounding, lightning protection, and delivering design deliverables for large capital projects.
  • Experience leading designs of medium voltage primary and secondary distribution substations, switchgear, and system protection.
  • Currently licensed professional engineer (PE).
  • US citizenship.
  • Knowledge of federal government design standards including UFCs, UFGSs, FCs, the NEC, ANSI/IEEE, NFPA, and ICC.
  • Experience in the consulting environment.
  • Proven client interaction as a senior electrical subject matter expert with ability to lead and mentor.
  • Proficient in electrical engineering principles, practices, design‑bid‑build, design/build, permitting, and project work‑related issues.
  • Ability to perform and review technical computations and calculations, interpret plans and specifications, and compare to regulations.
  • Ability to conduct construction observations and site investigations on construction and design aspects.
  • Experience providing critical review of vendor documents and preparing complex technical deliverables.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
  • Solid foundation using power distribution modeling software (SKM PTW, ETAP).
  • Solid foundation using lighting modeling software (AGI32).
  • Solid foundation in CAD and BIM software such as AutoCAD and REvit.
  • Experience with SpecsIntact specification authoring and editing.
  • Experience designing to NAVFAC and USACE design standards.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Solid foundation using power distribution modeling software (SKM PTW, ETAP).
  • Solid foundation using lighting modeling software (AGI32).
  • Solid foundation in CAD and BIM software such as AutoCAD and REvit.
  • Experience with SpecsIntact specification authoring and editing.

Expected Salary (all locations): $119,600 - $213,200

Expected Salary (Colorado only): $119,600 - $200,100
