Job summary

California State University, Northridge seeks a Detective Sergeant to lead major and sensitive investigations under the direction of a commander. The role involves evidence handling, case oversight, and coordination with internal teams and external agencies to support safety and investigative outcomes.

The incumbent will oversee investigations into major crimes, threat assessment cases, and ensure comprehensive victim/witness support and compliance with policies and procedures.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; Bachelor's degree preferred.
• 3 years of sworn law enforcement experience or 6 years of active experience with two years investigative experience preferred.
• Must be free of felony convictions and pass POST background checks; POST Supervisory Program desirable or must be completed within one year.

Responsibilities

• Conducts and oversees complex criminal investigations as lead case investigator for major and sensitive crimes.
• Provides investigative support for threat assessment cases including workplace violence, mental health incidents, and Title IX matters.
• Ensures victim and witness support services, protective measures, and referrals across cases.
• Coordinates administrative/operational functions: case/file management, sex offender tracking, VIP security, asset forfeiture, and external liaison.
• Oversees evidence/property management, crime scene processing, and supports surveillance, warrants, and policy compliance.
