Job description

Design | Seattle, United States | Remote, Remote | Full-Time

Atlassians can choose where they work – whether in an office, from home, or a combination of the two. That way, Atlassians have more control over supporting their family, personal goals, and other priorities. We can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity. Interviews and onboarding are conducted virtually, a part of being a distributed-first company.

This is a remote position. To help our teams work together, this role requires you to be located in the Pacific Time Zone.

The Role

The Data Experiences team is looking for an experienced and passionate Design Manager to own and drive the evolution of how we visualize the data behind our experiences, and express value back to our customers through engaging, visually compelling insights. As a manager in an organization consisting of multiple teams across Australia, N orth America, and India, they will work with cross functional partners, over a broad range of products and surfaces, to find new ways to visually tell our story, and our customer’s stories, through static and animated data visualization. This person will bring exceptional design, strategy, communication and people management skills.

As manager, you will be leading a talented team of visual, motion, and content designers, and hold a high bar for craft to ensure the team is delivering intuitive and delightful experiences. As leader, you will be a foundational member on the DX leadership team, codifying the user-centered vision, strategy, and roadmap for the team, alongside product and engineering. You embody strong operations and communications skills that guide the team to build great products anchored in real user needs. You’ll be expected to utilize your full range of people management skills, product strategy, product design, interaction design and visual design skills. You will define best practices, design for challenges both big and small, and lay the foundations for our product for years to come.

Strategy owner & influencer with strong product sense:

With Product & Engineering leadership, define and own user-centered strategy and design execution of teams

Proactively identify new problems and opportunities for the team that are rooted in user problems, working intimately with user research and data to propose paths forward

Drive bold, innovative conceptual ideas and turn them into useful and valuable products for our billions of users.

Partner with PM and ENG teams to help shape our strategy and to bring a user centric approach to implementing for both prospective customers and enterprise customers

Partner with PM and ENG to have a working understanding of technical systems in order to creatively scope prioritization & trade-offs

Manage a talented team of product and content designers that consistently raises the craft bar on projects and remains well-balanced across a range of design skill sets.

Responsible for overall team performance and health, resource allocation, project prioritization, and building an environment of high quality design.

Oversee complex design initiatives spanning multiple work streams, maintaining a high-quality standard and removing blockers to ensure timely delivery.

Provide strategic, visual and systems-oriented feedback for end-to-end flows and experiences to ensure we and our customers reach our goals.

Organizational leader:

Work alongside the broader Design leadership team to craft our teams’ culture, processes, and tools and ensure we’re building toward a connected vision and product experience

Contribute to strategic decisions around the future direction of Data Experiences

Develop and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders across the Atlassian product portfolio to drive alignment and support for design initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Ensure high-quality, outcome-focused deliverables by effectively managing and prioritizing multiple work streams.

Develop a deep understanding of the Atlassian Home ecosystem and how design decisions impact the broader Atlassian portfolio.

Provide ongoing coaching and feedback, fostering a high-performing, balanced, and diverse design team.

Promote alignment and build trust across cross-functional teams, clearly communicating complex issues and fostering collaboration.

Lead your team through change and ambiguity, ensuring consistent delivery and adapting to evolving priorities.

You have a minimum of 8-10+ years of experience in Product Design and a minimum of 3+ years experience of directly managing Product Designers

You have demonstrable expertise as a designer and design leader, with a strong portfolio of presentable case studies showcasing how you’ve lead teams towards high craft experiences from inception through launch.

You have demonstrable understanding of, and designing for, highly complex platforms - and preferably for graphs specifically - at an enterprise level.

You maintain an outstanding portfolio, with presentable case studies showcasing how you’ve lead teams towards high craft experiences from inception through launch

You have expertise and a background in design leadership roles for organizations that have shipped software to users, partnering closely with Product and Engineering

You have experience leading product direction, strategic thinking, developing goals, identify opportunities, and make decisions based on impact to the customer and the company.

You have experience in people development and up-leveling design craft – you have what it takes to grow and empower an incredible design team

You are a coach to others and give and ask for honest and critical feedback - you inspire, not merely direct

You have experience leading a diverse team in a rapid growth environment. Huge plus if you’ve worked with distant teammates and understand the communication patterns of working with highly distributed teams

You have demonstrable experience working with data and research, conducting and measuring product design experiments, and a passion for setting and achieving OKRs and metrics that materially impact the business.

You have proven ability to collaborate with cross-functional partners, align stakeholders, and influence product strategy.

You're an excellent communicator, both written and verbal, and you're comfortable managing high-stakes communications with leadership

You embody a learning and growth mindset: Our team size and our design process will evolve and change many times over the next few years. We strive to continuously improve and integrate what we learn — from our work and with each other

You lead with empathy and resilience: empathy for our customers, to build a product and a service they’ll love. Empathy for our coworkers, to build a workplace we’ll love. Resilience to be able to take feedback from anywhere, consider it gracefully, and fold it into your thinking and your work.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with delivering 0-1 products from concept stages to launch, bringing bold ideas to life

Experience working on large scale, complex, ambiguous projects across multiple teams

Experience managing support for multiple product teams at one time

Experience with high velocity experimentation
