Job summary

Tokio Marine Highland is seeking a hands-on Lead Data Engineer to design, develop, and evolve our enterprise Snowflake platform, leading a small team and shaping data engineering standards.

Location: Chicago, IL with a hybrid schedule (2-3 days in the office); remote options considered for exceptional candidates across the US. You will drive scalable data pipelines, data models, and cloud-native solutions aligned with business needs.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience designing, implementing, and optimizing enterprise Snowflake platforms.
• Strong proficiency in SQL, Python, dbt, AWS, and data modeling for data warehouses.
• Experience modernizing fragmented data ecosystems with cloud-native solutions.
• Experience establishing engineering standards, CI/CD, automated testing, and infrastructure as code.
• Experience leading technical initiatives and coaching teams while remaining hands-on in delivery.
• Insurance data domain experience (policy, underwriting, claims, billing, finance) is a plus.

Tokio Marine Highland (TMH) is modernizing its enterprise data platform to better support reporting, analytics, operational decision-making, and future AI capabilities across the organization.

We are seeking a hands-on Lead Data Engineer to lead the design, development, and evolution of our Snowflake platform. This is a unique opportunity to help build the foundation of TMH's modern data platform-not simply maintain an existing environment. You'll play a key role in shaping the platform architecture, establishing engineering standards, and developing the scalable data capabilities that will support the business for years to come.

Working closely with Technology and business leaders, you'll remain actively involved in solution design and technical delivery while leading a small team of Data Engineers and driving the adoption of modern data engineering practices.

Location: Chicago, IL preferred, with a hybrid schedule of 2-3 days per week in the office. For the right candidate, hybrid arrangements may also be considered at our offices in Frisco, TX; South Pasadena, CA; or Miami, FL. Fully remote candidates located elsewhere in the U.S. may also be considered.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design, development, and ongoing evolution of TMH's enterprise Snowflake platform.
• Design scalable data pipelines, data models, and reusable engineering frameworks that support reporting, analytics, and business operations.
• Establish engineering standards and best practices for data quality, governance, testing, deployment, and platform performance.
• Modernize fragmented and legacy data environments by implementing scalable, cloud-native data engineering solutions.
• Partner with Technology and business stakeholders to deliver trusted, enterprise data solutions.
• Lead, coach, and develop a small team of Data Engineers while fostering collaboration and technical excellence.
• Contribute hands-on to architecture, solution design, and technical implementation.

What You'll Bring

• Extensive experience designing, implementing, and optimizing enterprise Snowflake platforms, with experience serving as a technical lead or platform owner.
• Strong technical proficiency in SQL, Python, dbt, AWS, and cloud-native data engineering, including data modeling, ELT processes, and enterprise data warehousing.
• Experience modernizing fragmented or legacy data ecosystems through scalable cloud-based data solutions.
• Experience establishing engineering standards and applying modern software engineering practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, infrastructure as code, and observability.
• Experience leading technical initiatives and developing engineers through coaching, mentoring, and collaborative problem solving while remaining hands-on in technical delivery.
• Property & Casualty insurance experience with an understanding of core insurance data domains such as policy administration, underwriting, claims, billing, finance, and operational reporting.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills with the ability to partner effectively with both technical teams and business stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

• SnowPro Core or Advanced Certification.
• Experience in a Specialty, MGA, or Reinsurance environment.
