Job summary

Job description

Job Summary

The Lead Structured Cabling Technician is responsible for leading and executing complex structured cabling and fiber optic installations for large‑scale commercial and data center projects. This role combines hands‑on technical expertise with team leadership, project coordination, and quality assurance. The ideal candidate has extensive experience with fiber infrastructure, structured cabling systems, and commercial construction while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, productivity, and customer satisfaction.

Job Responsibilities
  • Lead installation teams on large‑scale commercial and data center structured cabling projects.
  • Install cable infrastructure and perform fiber rough‑in activities.
  • Install, dress, label, and terminate copper and fiber optic cabling.
  • Perform ribbon and fusion fiber splicing using industry‑standard equipment.
  • Install and configure single‑mode and multi‑mode fiber, including ST, LC, SC, and SC‑APC connectors.
  • Conduct Fluke and OTDR testing and troubleshoot fiber optic systems.
  • Install fiber trays, ladder racks, cabinets, cable management systems, and power trays.
  • Rack and stack customer equipment and build server racks according to project specifications.
  • Complete outside plant (OSP) fiber installations into data center environments.
  • Receive project materials and assemble hardware as required.
  • Perform quality control inspections and troubleshoot infrastructure installations.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and installation documentation.
  • Communicate effectively with project teams, supervisors, contractors, and customers.
  • Conduct safety meetings and ensure compliance with OSHA standards and company safety procedures.
  • Order materials and assist with labor forecasting for project execution.
  • Submit blueprint revisions and change orders to the Project Manager.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
Job Requirements
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Data Center Technician.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience installing, terminating, testing, and splicing fiber optic cabling.
  • Experience leading crews of 10 or more technicians on commercial construction projects.
  • Experience with structured cabling, low‑voltage systems, and commercial construction environments.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • OSHA 10 certification preferred.
  • Proficiency with fiber optic splicing, termination, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience using Fluke testers, OTDR equipment, and other fiber testing tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to work safely while climbing ladders, operating scissor lifts, and working in confined spaces.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, move up to 75 pounds, and stand for extended periods.
  • Must provide basic hand tools, including a multi‑bit screwdriver, tape measure, snips, needle‑nose pliers, channel‑lock pliers, punch‑down tool, flashlight, tool pouch, gloves, and steel‑toe or composite‑toe work boots.

Additional Job Details (Commute, Attendance, etc.)
  • Standard schedule is Monday through Friday, day shift.
  • Overtime and night shift work may be required based on project needs.
  • Candidates must be willing to travel to other project sites for training as needed. Once assigned to the primary project site, work will primarily be local.
  • Candidates will interview with the Project Manager and Department Manager.
  • Candidates selected for Lead Technician positions must successfully complete a technical screening.
