Francis Howell School District is seeking a Lead Custodian for Elementary & Early Childhood to maintain a clean, safe environment for students and staff. The role oversees custodial operations, supports daily activities, and ensures facilities are prepared for classrooms and campus events.

The position reports to the Custodial Foreman and requires experience in custodial services, strong safety practices, and the ability to manage staff and tasks effectively.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Experience in custodial services with increasing responsibility.
• Ability to operate industrial cleaning equipment and maintain records.
• Knowledge of industrial cleaning methods and safety procedures.
• Ability to schedule activities and adapt to changing priorities.

Responsibilities

• Oversee custodial operations to ensure clean, safe facilities.
• Assist with snow removal and prepare sites for daily operations and events.
• Clean classrooms, offices, restrooms, and grounds to maintain a sanitary environment.
• Perform summer maintenance tasks (floors, furniture) and minor equipment maintenance.
• Train custodial staff to develop safety and trade skills.
• Distribute supplies and ensure facility safety by securing doors and activating alarms.
• Conduct safety drills and other tasks to ensure efficient site operation.

Job Summary

The Lead Custodian - Elementary & Early Childhood is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and attractive environment for students, staff, and visitors. The role involves overseeing custodial operations, supporting daily activities, and ensuring that facilities are prepared for classroom activities and campus events.

Key Responsibilities

• Safety & Accessibility:
  • Assist with snow removal to ensure access and safety.
  • Prepare the site for daily operations and events (e.g., opening gates, raising flags).
  • Monitor students and staff to prevent injuries and ensure site safety.
• Cleaning & Maintenance:
  • Clean classrooms, offices, restrooms, and grounds to maintain a sanitary environment.
  • Perform summer maintenance tasks (e.g., stripping/waxing floors, moving furniture).
  • Conduct minor maintenance on custodial equipment and fixtures (e.g., changing vacuum belts).
• Oversee and support assigned custodial personnel to ensure tasks are performed efficiently.
• Distribute custodial supplies and equipment as needed.
• Train custodial staff to develop safety and trade skills.
• Supplies & Safety:
  • Replenish classroom and restroom supplies (e.g., paper towels, soap).
  • Respond to immediate safety and operational concerns (e.g., facility damage, alarms).
  • Secure the facility by locking doors, gates, and activating alarms.
• Other Duties:
  • Conduct safety drills and training (e.g., fire, intruder, earthquake).
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned to ensure the efficient functioning of the site.

Minimum Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Experience: Job-related experience with increasing levels of responsibility in custodial services is required.
• Skills: Ability to operate industrial cleaning equipment, adhere to safety practices, and maintain accurate records.
• Knowledge: Methods of industrial cleaning, basic maintenance tools, and safety procedures.
• Abilities: Schedule activities, manage tasks, work with diverse individuals, and adapt to changing priorities.
