Job summary

Indianapolis Zoo seeks a Curator of Marine Mammals & Oceans to lead Marine Mammals and Oceans departments, directing animal welfare, conservation, staff development, and guest experience.

The ideal candidate has 10+ years in zoo/aquatic care with 4+ years of leadership, strong collaboration skills, and a proven track record in program management and breeding/reproduction oversight. This is a full-time, on-site role with opportunities to advance conservation initiatives.

Qualifications

• Minimum 10 years direct or related zoo/aquatic animal-care experience.
• At least 4 years of personnel management or supervisory experience.
• Knowledge of animal husbandry, welfare, training, enrichment, reproduction, collection management, and health practices for marine mammals/aquatic animals.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership for the Marine Mammals and Oceans departments.
• Lead, coach, mentor, and develop staff with performance management.
• Oversee staffing, scheduling, training, and daily departmental operations.
• Oversee animal husbandry, welfare, training, enrichment, and reproductive programs.
• Collaborate with Veterinary Services to monitor health and welfare concerns.
• Lead collection planning including acquisitions, transfers, and breeding.
• Ensure compliance with zoo policies, AZA standards, and regulations.
• Oversee transportation, permits, and collection records with relevant departments.
• Provide curatorial expertise for exhibits, holding areas, and renovations.
• Participate in conservation programs, AZA activities, and Species Survival Plan.
