Job Summary

Assists Physician and Registered Nurse with basic patient care based on individual patient need within the scope of practice under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager. Maintains an environment that is prepared for patient care. In addition to the clinical duties, the Lead Radiologic Technologist will also provide coverage when needed and provide day-to-day Radiology and Laboratory leadership and support. Oversees the laboratory and radiology department as described below. Oversees the daily operations of the Radiology Department by ensuring that the department operates and is compliant with all State, Federal, and accrediting agencies (as applicable).

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical
  • Reviews and assigns a radiology work schedule.
  • Patient communication and preparation including removal of garments and jewelry that may interfere with procedures and explain how the process works.
  • Prepares patient for radiological procedure by positioning patient; adjusting immobilization devices; moving equipment into specified position; adjusting equipment controls to set exposure factors.
  • Setting equipment to obtain the best density, detail, and contrast of the area being imaged.
  • Perform basic verification and quality control checks on radiographic and film processing equipment.
  • Apply radiation protective measures and appropriate care for the patient during the examination.
  • Properly operate x-ray and radiographic equipment to produce radiographic images of the human body for diagnosis by a radiologist.
  • Ensures operation of radiology equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer’s instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Maintains radiology supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.
  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal and professional requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Gains patient cooperation by reducing anxieties; providing explanations of treatment; answering questions.
  • Minimizes radiation to patient and staff by practicing radiation protection techniques, using beam restrictive devices, patient shielding, and knowledge of exposure factors.
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols; following drug protocols in case of reactions to drugs, such as contrast media, administering first aid, and using the emergency cart.
  • Maintains production and quality of radiographs by following established standards and procedures; developing radiographs; observing radiographic results; making necessary adjustments.
  • Documents patient care services by charting in patient and department records.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • In addition, the following duties may be performed to assist with proper patient care:
  • Perform initial vital signs and recheck as necessary.
  • Carry out wound care for scrubs, abrasions, small cuts, puncture wounds.
  • Apply wound dressing.
  • Apply ace bandages.
  • Apply splints according to provider orders.
  • Collection and processing of lab specimens. (UA, sputum, stool, etc.)
  • Perform CPR.
  • Assist with pelvic exams.
  • Assist with visitor control and notifying patients/families of any delay in care.
  • Administer basic oxygen therapy per policy or order.
  • Placement of pulse oximetry and cardiac monitor.
  • Obtain 12 lead EKG per policy or order.
  • Provide age-appropriate care for patients.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with sterile instrument procedures.
  • Perform daily and weekly cleaning duties as assigned.
  • Start IV’s and perform blood draws.
Laboratory
  • Directs and coordinates activities of radiology and laboratory in their facility.
  • Assigns API testing to clinical staff as well as performs proficiency testing (API) in compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations.
  • Demonstrates new techniques, equipment, and procedures to clinical staff.
  • Assist with troubleshooting equipment issues.
  • Assumes responsibility for and takes action regarding any Quality Control or Quality Assurance issues as it pertains to specific job duties. Maintains lab instruments and equipment by manufacturer’s specifications. Serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff.
RSO
  • Interprets new and existing regulations, advises leadership on technical and regulatory issues regarding the strategic direction of the radiation safety program applies strategic measures as appropriate.
  • Participates in development, implementation, and maintenance of policies, objectives, short and long range planning; develops and implements projects and programs to assist in the accomplishment of established goals.
  • Represents the organization at various community and business meetings, committees, and task forces; promotes existing and new programs and policies.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • May propose and create new programs in the area of radiation safety including research of regulations, process development, development of Standard Operating Procedures and implementation.
  • Manages programs of critical importance; works with leadership, individual principal investigators, and the radiation safety staff in the development and implementation of new proposals as well as the coordination and administration of existing projects within the radiation safety program.
  • Responds to radiation safety emergencies and prepares and submits required reports.
  • Manages the radiation safety training program to ensure that only authorized, qualified individuals work with radiation; manages the personnel dosimetry program to limit radiation exposure to radiation users and ensure compliance with Physicians Premier policies and regulatory exposure limits.
  • May perform as a preceptor or train new hire Radiology Department employees on the use of all Radiology Diagnostic equipment.
  • Reviews policy and procedures with all new hire employees about the operation of the Radiology Department.
  • Maintains copies of all Radiology Department employees’ credentials on file as required by State law and ensures that all employees credentialing remain current.
  • Informs within an allotted time frame, the Human Resource Department and Administrator should any employees credentials expire.
  • Receives dosimeter reports and informs Administrator of any positive reports of exposure. Audits repeat log and reports any excessive repeats outside of the benchmarks to the Administrator and Medical Director.
  • Reports radiology errors, misreads, tests performed on the wrong body part to the physician on duty, Administrator, and the Medical Director.
  • May assist in the implementation of a corrective action plan as requested by the Medical Director, Administrator, or Governing Board.
  • May receive a report of equipment in need of repair and request maintenance work orders from the designated service vendor.
  • May drive to multiple locations to perform job-related duties as assigned.
Regulatory Requirements, Certificates, Education and Experience Must possess and maintain the following:
  • American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) certificate.
  • Texas Medical Board certificate.
  • Current Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR/BLS) card.
  • Demonstrate the ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships with co-workers and health team members.
  • Communicates through appropriate channels.
  • Demonstrate the ability to handle emergency situations calmly and effectively.
  • Graduate from an approved accredited program for diagnostic radiologic technology.
  • Medical terminology.

  • Attend all ER required meetings and in-service education as scheduled by the Nurse Director.
  • Remain flexible in staffing patterns and resolution of staffing conflicts; participates in temporary assignments.
  • Compliance with attendance standards by reporting to work on time and as scheduled.
  • Demonstrate flexibility when changes in assignments are necessary.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements for radiology and lab procedures.

  • Ability to work all shifts including day, evening, nights, weekends and holiday hours as needed.
