Job summary

UHS is seeking an experienced cook to operate a full kitchen, including baking, roasting, grilling, and steaming a variety of foods. The role includes supervising kitchen staff, maintaining safety and cleanliness, and ensuring proper food handling during all service periods.

The candidate should have 4+ years in high-volume food production, basic computer skills, and the ability to communicate effectively in English and Spanish, with certification as a food handler where required.

Job description

Responsibilities

POSITION SUMMARY:

Must be familiar with the operation of food service equipment; Must have a working knowledge of food sanitation and knows acceptable techniques in handling and service of food to guests. Supervises other cooks and ensures proper techniques and procedures are followed on a daily basis. Bakes, roasts, broils, grills, steams all types of food product. Has responsibilities during tray line assembly process. Must help maintain floors clean and must assist with overall kitchen cleanliness. Consistently demonstrates a concern for cleanliness of work area. Knows how to lift properly and how to avoid careless kitchen related accidents. Has common kitchen safety knowledge. Wash certain items by hand, such as pots and pans. Plans ahead and sets up for the next day by prepping and planning accordingly. Communicates effectively with Supervisors/Managers pertinent information.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Ability to read, write and communicate in English/Spanish languages.

2. 2 years of training in the culinary arts desired

3. Four years of experience in high volume food production as cook.

4. Experience in catering, menu planning, food preparation and service.

5. Basic computer skills desired.

6. Must be able to travel as needed for position

7. Must demonstrate commitment and adherence to STHS’s Compliance Program and Code of Conduct through compliance with all policies and procedures, the Code of Conduct, attendance at required training and immediately reporting suspected compliance issue(s) to the Compliance Officer.

EDUCATION / LICENSURE:

1. Certified by the City of McAllen or Edinburg (depending on facility employed) or accredited by the State of Texas and ANSI—the American National Standard Institute as a food handler

2. High School diploma, GED or Higher Education required; or at least four years of prior experience as a Cook considered in lieu of a degree.
