Position Overview

The Lead Machinist position will be based out of Rocket Lab's headquarters in Long Beach, CA. This person will report to the Fabrication Supervisor and develop a high performing team responsible for machining and fabrication of a wide variety of parts supporting multiple programs across Rocket Lab. You will interface with teams including Supply Chain, CNC Programming, Quality, Manufacturing Engineering, Design, and Propulsion. Your team will handle fabrication for Electron, Rutherford, Neutron, Archimedes, and Space Systems.

Responsibilities

1. Oversee the operation and maintenance of CNC equipment.
2. Lead a team of talented machinists in development and production activities to deliver rocket and satellite components.
3. Allocate resources to meet delivery schedules for various production and R&D programs.
4. Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure high-quality parts are manufactured and delivered.

Qualifications

• 12+ years of professional machine shop experience.
• Ability to set up jobs on CNC Mills and Lathes.
• Ability to edit CNC programs.
• Experience machining a wide variety of materials.
• Experience leading a team in a fast-paced environment running 5+ machines.
• Strong GD&T and blueprint familiarity, inspection knowledge.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience programming in NX from CAD or drawings.
• Experience with casting and/or 3-D printed materials.
• Experience with NLX-2500-4000 & DMU-50-125 machines.

Additional Requirements

• Willing to work C Shift (Friday – Sunday, 5:30am - 3:30pm or 2:30pm - 1:00am).
• Extended hours and weekends as needed.
• Ability to stand for extended periods (minimum 8 hours).
• Lift up to 50 lbs unassisted.
• Repetitive motion, bending, twisting, and manual handling skills.

Level and base salary will be determined case-by-case, considering experience and skills. Base salary range in CA: $35—$50 USD.
