This position supports Mercy’s philosophy of patient centered care by enhancing the health of our patients and community by optimizing nutritional care. The Lead Clinical Dietitian serves as an active member of the interdisciplinary team to identify clinical needs, implement interventions and provide education. This position directly supports the clinical dietitian staff by serving as a mentor, addressing dietitian daily concerns, maintaining adequate dietitian staffing, and support department and interdisciplinary objectives pertaining to nutrition. Job DutiesProvides current evidenced based standards of nutrition care. Nutrition care includes but is not limited to screening, assessment, physical assessment, intervention, education, and discharge planning. Communicates effectively in patient's medical record for care provided. Serves as an active member of the interdisciplinary care team. Participates in and supports nutrition initiatives within the facility and the community. Serves as a mentor for dietetic interns, peers and other staff. Assists the Food and Nutrition Director with staffing which includes clinical dietitian interviewing, training, scheduling, tracking productivity and malnutrition documentation. Facilitates review of all clinical nutrition areas including education materials, diet manual, enteral and oral formulary and facility approved diets. Coordinates dietetic internship program and professional job shadow experiences. Ensures that competencies are kept current for Clinical Dietitian I and II. Supports the educational needs of the clinical dietitian staff.
Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesAbility to work independently and take initiative. Good critical thinking and problem-solving skills Good communication and listening skills. Ability to plan and perform diverse duties related to the field of dietetics. Ability to demonstrate effective management skills related to program development and implementation.
Professional ExperiencePrevious experience in clinical nutrition services in an acute hospital setting required (Inpatient Lead Clinical Dietitian). Previous experience in clinical nutrition services in an outpatient setting required (Outpatient Lead Clinical Dietitian). Minimum three years professional experience is preferred.
EducationBachelor's degree in nutrition or related field required. Master's degree in Dietetics or related field and/or specialty certification in Diabetes, Renal, Nutrition Support, Pediatric, Gerontology, Oncology or Sports Nutrition is required.
Licensure, Certification, RegistrationRegistered with the Commission of Dietetic Registration and Dietitian Licensed by the State of Iowa required. Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse & Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required. Employee must submit certification of completed training to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date.
