Job summary

The Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters in Norfolk seeks a dedicated laboratory professional to perform and assist with technical procedures and routine exams. You will coordinate activities among Medical Technologists and Technicians, and support Laboratory System Facilitators and Couriers in daily analyses.

The role requires ASCP CLS/MT certification, CPR training, and a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology with clinical internship.

Job description

• Under general supervision, and following established policies, procedures, and regulations, perform/assists with various technical procedures, maintenance, or exams. Reports to department leadership.
• ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Perform/assists various technical procedures, maintenance, or exams.
• Assists in the coordination of activities for Medical Technologist and Medical Laboratory Technicians performing routine and special laboratory analyzes.
• Assists in the coordination of activities for Laboratory System Facilitators and Laboratory Couriers.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
• Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist by the Board of Registry of American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) required.
• CPR Training required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire for identified individuals in job role.
• MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
• Knowledge of chemistry, biology, mathematics, hematology, microbiology and serology at a level normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, which includes successful completion of a supervised clinical internship.
• Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with physicians, nursing personnel and other clinicians while reporting and explaining test results, gathering information, etc.
• Approximately two years of laboratory experience is preferred in order to gain knowledge and proficiency in performing procedures.
• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and other Laboratory Information System (LIS) software preferred.
• Analytical skills necessary in order to interpret and analyze routine test results, and determine appropriate course of action for abnormal or atypical results.
• WORKING CONDITIONS
• Laboratory service areas work environment with frequent exposure to physical discomforts due to unpleasant odors from specimens and chemicals. Frequent exposure to infectious agents when handling hazardous material, but potential for personal harm or injury is reduced when proper safety and health precautions are followed.
